In some areas, golf ministries are giving people a way for to have fun and build fellowship while learning more about churches and faith- based organizations. "Just about anyone can play golf," says Dennis Hammond, president of the Christ- ian Golf Club of Cen- tral California. The club holds monthly tournaments to help raise money for faith- based organizations. This year, proceeds are going to the Evangel Home, a Christian organization helping women and children. "You don't have to be a gifted athlete to play golf," he says. "All ages play, youngsters to grandparents in their 90s. You don't have to be a good player to have fun." Faith leaders say Signs adorn a tee box at the Fresno/Madera Youth for Christ Annual Golf Classic on April 22. golf ministries create opportunities for people to better understand what they do. It sometimes translates into new members, volunteers and donations. But they say they are mainly interested in helping people. When the weather is best for golf, ministry events are presented in California's Central Valley nearly every day. On a recent Thursday, for example, Fresno/Madera Youth for Christ held its annual golf tournament _ 110 golfers played through an afternoon drizzle at Fort Wash- ington Country Club. After play ended, everyone gathered in the club's ban- quet room, where Youth for Christ's executive director, Ed Kaczmarek, gave a presentation on how the faith-based organization helps needy kids and how donors can help. "Golf reaches those who are business owners and com- munity leaders _ and it's a great group to reach," Kaczmarek says. "There's good camaraderie, good fellowship on the golf course.” MCT photo We tend to believe there are certain things we would never do. We tell our selves "we are not that kind of person." We pray when we think about it. We attend our favorite church. We read the Bible when our pastor emphasizes it in his sermon or when the guilt of not reading it becomes unbearable. Generally we are living our lives as we please, living as members of our par- ticular culture, sailing pleasantly in the cultural breeze that surrounds us. Over time, without our being consciously aware of it, we are drifting away from God. Without warning the tsunami of consequences of our life of ignoring godly things slams into our lives full force. We are left grasping for straws, drowning in a sea of disbelief and shock. How did we get here? When did this event begin to take shape? Why didn’t we see it coming? The Hebrew people experienced that same astonished reaction when the Babylonians swept across their nation taking thousands captive. Everything they loved, everything that was familiar to them disappeared in a matter of hours. No longer would they get up early to go to the local market. No longer would they barter and trade their wares. No longer would they linger over bread and soup discussing the politics of the day. Life as they knew it – as they compromised it one concession at a time – was over. On the long march in chains to Babylon, Jeremiah’s words must have rung in their ears. I imagine they asked themselves why they hadn’t lis- tened. Why had they been sucked into a vacuum of disobedience? Perhaps, like many of us, they could not believe they had committed such atrocities against Jehovah God. Maybe they too struggled with accepting the fact that their actions had resulted in pain for so many people. We like to think well of ourselves, but the truth is all of us are capable of destruc- tive choices. In fact scripture gives a graphic picture of human nature. There is none righteous, not even one. There is none who understands. There is none who seeks God. All have turned aside, together they have become useless. There is none who does good. There is not even one. Their throat is an open grave, with their tongues they keep deceiving. The poison of asps is under their lips, whose mouth if full of cursing and bitterness. Their feet are swift to shed blood, destruction and misery are in their paths, and the path of peace have they do not know. There is no fear of God before their eyes." (Romans 3:10-18). Without Christ we are trapped in an no longer have power over our bodies (1 John 3:9; Romans 6:12). He broke our slavery to sin (Romans 6:18) and gave us a life of righteousness (Romans 6:19) which in turn leads us to a life of peace and joy (Hebrews 12:11). Life took me where I Shirley Fay GodTalk didn’t want to go when I was in my thirties. I had planned to be a missionary. My children were going to serve God. My life was going to be the perfect offering of praise to God. But that did not happen. Instead my husband left me for another woman. My three children rejected God and I was left stand- ing with nothing to lift up to God as a gift of worship. I can still remember tears streaming down my checks as I cried, "God, I have nothing to offer you." eternal cycle of poor choices and regret. Oh, but the wonderful news is Christ has come to set us free from our curse of death (Romans 7:24-25, 8:2). We who were once held captive by what our bodies craved, what our emo- tions demanded and what our desires screamed are given freedom through the magnificent grace of Jesus Christ. He has redeemed; he has even given us part of his divine nature. "For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promis- es, in order that by them you might become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust" (2 Peter 1:4). Our messiah came so that sin will A.M. Bhattacharyya, an active member of Hindu community: In Hindu theol- ogy there is a clear distinc- tion between the physical body and the inner con- sciousness, which is the ultimate source of the body's driving force. The body is a material product, subject to birth, growth and decay. The inner conscious- ness is one with God, and therefore, it is pure, divine and immortal. According to the Law of Karma and Reincarnation, when a person dies, the soul leaves the body with the subtle impressions of the person's accumulated karma at the moment of death. Thereafter, the soul with the karmic impressions of the previous life enters into a growing fetus in a mother's womb. At what stage? The Hindu scripture Garbha Upanisad (The Book of Knowledge of the Womb) gives detailed infor- mation about the stages of development of a fetus in the mother's womb. Clear as a bell he spoke to me, "That is the point." It was at that moment that the gift of grace became glorious to me! I needed him! I had to have him! My works were empty striving for glory and I hadn’t recognized it. If God has been gracious enough to open your eyes to see the devastation of your sin, repent by turning away from your sin, and rejoice! Rejoice that you see your need for his grace. Rejoice because you now more fully understand the wonder of his glorious love. Dr. Shirley Fay is a Christian psychotherapist with a private practice in Red Bluff. She works out of Bethel Church in Red Bluff. Voices of Faith: In your faith, when does human life begin? HINDUISM According to this scrip- ture, the "life force" enters the body in the seventh month. Nevertheless, Hindu ethics go against willful ter- mination of a fetus at any stage of fetal growth, unless the mother's life is in dan- ger. ISLAM Syed E. Hasan, Ph.D., Islamic Research Founda- tion International: There are different interpretations of the question among Muslim scholars, but most agree that human life begins in the mother's womb 120 days Tehama County Church Directory HOYT-COLE CHAPEL OF THE FLOWERS 816 Walnut St. - Red Bluff ABUNDANT LIFE FELLOWSHIP — 21080 Luther Rd. — Pastor J.E. Prophet Muhammad tells us that 120 days fol- lowing conception, Allah orders an angel to infus part of his spirit into the growing fetus after certain aspects of the individual's life — such as his or her life span and time of death, sustenance and traits of character — have been determined. According to general consensus, 120 days marks the beginning of human life and entitles the growing fetus to rights as an individ- ual and lineage.
