The honoring of mothers By CAROLYN BARBER My Mother was a gem. She made my growing up time comfort- able even though as a teen-ager, I claimed to know more than my mother. A few years into my grow- ing time, that is becoming an adult and a mother too, I realized that I did not know more than my mother. I have since learned that hundreds of children have claimed knowing more that their mothers only to have to eat their words later. Each year I pull out a statement that I wrote for my mother. I have published it before but feel that I need to do it again as a reminder to me how carefully Mother nurtured me. My Mother I loved my Mother’s chocolate fudge and the crispy way she cooked pork chops, I loved the way she read special words from the Parent’s Magazine, She asked me to answer the questions And she said she was so proud when I knew the answers. She taught me to read before I went to school. Mother told me to never say "can’t." Mother loved to have me wear red clothes, I am sorry I didn’t wear more red for her. She loved my brother and me, more than any- thing else in her life. Thank you Mother for loving me so much, and for always remind- ing me to never say I can’t, Today I can, and I will have the Preschoolers sing your favorite song that Grandma Elsie played for you on her pump organ. "The Little Bird’s Ball." Love, Carolyn "The Little Birds’ Ball" was a Folk song sung in Indiana. I have not been able to identify a spe- cific author but was able to secure the copy of the song from the Library in Burns, Oregon one year when I was visiting family there. Folk songs have made a great impression on people over the years. Songs that make you happy, songs that make you sad and those ditties that are just plain fun and can lift you out of doldrums of life. My Mother’s Mother had a favorite song for each child to hear each evening before bed. Unfortunately Grandma Elsie had to leave her pump organ in Nebraska during the Great Depres- sion as they traveled to Colorado to try to seek employment in those Carolyn Barber hard times. Each child remembered their special song into adulthood and I believe they passed it on to their own children. In 1903, by educator Henry van Dyke com- posed a prayer, titled "A Prayer for Mother" Fol- lowing are excerpts that are true for many moth- ers. "…Lord Jesus, Thou has known a mother’s love and tender care, …for my own mother…I make this Sabbath prayer. …Protect her life…I cannot pay my debt for all the love that she has given; but thou, Love’s Lord, wilt not forget her reward, Bless her in earth and heaven." This tribute to Henry’s mother is a fair reminder that each of us should treasure our mothers. Henry van Dyke’s prayer was popular and by World War I it was included in prayer books printed by the U.S. government for use by troops in the field. Happy Mother’s Day!
