THE DRAGON'S WAGON G A M M A P S I C H A P T E R O F B E T A T H E T A P I Fall 2018 W herever you may find yourselves, best wishes and hap- piness from the Beta Tau Alumni Corporation and the Gamma Psi actives. Welcome to another fall semester at Michigan State. The MSU Beta actives are another high GPA, high potential group of men I am proud to get to know and help them "build a bridge to cross the chasm." Brothers, I ask you, how are you helping to build this bridge? We had a large graduating senior class last year. Therefore, we need some alumni help with recruitment this fall. If you are unable to suggest a recruit, you can also give back to our actives by partici- pating in one of the fall events or donating to assist. Regarding housing, over the past 12 months BTAC has been active with long-term rental discussion on two other properties in East Lansing. These were opportunities that re- sulted from BTAC keeping our ears to the ground in a very restrictive East Lansing commercial rental market and taking action when an opportunity arose. One opportunity was on Harrison Street and another was on Woodmere near the old 1148 E. Grand River property. We will continue to keep our ears to the ground and listen. The Bogue Street Beta house is worn and you will see some noticeable improvements in the next few weeks, including new flooring and other exterior improvements. The actives are motivated to get the work started. Are you willing to help with the completion of improvements? In general and for any questions, feel free to contact me at btac860@gmail.com to help "build a bridge to cross the chasm." You may also reach out to find out more about what is happening with the chapter. See you at the ninth annual Beta Homecoming tailgate October 6! "B eta helped me understand the im- portance of being part of something bigger than me at a time when it was all about me." This truth and others have helped Tim Ko- tas '88 navigate the evolving healthcare industry for the last 30 years. "My first job was in a Chicago suburban hospital working as mental health worker on an adolescent psychiatric unit. Loving that work, I decided to go for a master's in social work and once I finished my degree, I quickly got caught up in managed care and health insurance." Seeing the bigger picture and how he can help others motivates Tim to keep digging deeper. "We can't ignore the economics of healthcare. The generations of people who follow a doctor's advice is being rapidly replaced by a questioning consumer with more information at their fingertips than any clinician can retain in their heads. It is a truly exciting time to be in healthcare if you em- brace that paradigm shift. If you keep a tra- ditional view of the system you are likely to find it difficult and unfulfilling work." Shifting his focus to the wider spectrum of healthcare has been rewarding for Tim. "Somehow, I went from being a social worker to an entrepreneur. The last two businesses I have been involved in have been startups focused on finding ways to improve health- care while lowering cost." Today, Tim is an owner of Welvie, one of 107 companies in the country and only one of two private companies to win an Innovation Chal- lenge Award by The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). "The tech- nology we invented helps Americans nav- igate the complexities of healthcare and increase their own odds of getting the best outcomes."
