(AP) — DeAnthony Thomas returned the opening kickoff 94 yards for the first of his two touchdowns, Marcus Mariota accounted for three scores, and No. 5 Oregon raced past No. 7 Kansas State 35-17 at the Fiesta Bowl on Thursday night. Oregon (12-1) jumped out to a 15-0 lead behind Thomas' opening return and 23-yard touchdown catch in the first quarter. Kansas State (11-2) tried to bull its way behind Heisman Trophy finalist Collin Klein, only to get overwhelmed by the speedy Ducks, who got some help with an obscure 1-point safety on a blocked extra-point kick. Mariota added a 24yard touchdown pass to Kenjon Barner in the second quarter and ran for a 2-yard score in the third to give Oregon its second straight BCS bowl win after beating Wisconsin in last year's Rose Bowl. Klein threw two interceptions and had 30 yards rushing on 13 carries. Corning High senior guard Cody Long (20) rises for a jumper against Central Valley on Thursday at Corning High School. Cardinals advance to semifinals By ANDRE BYIK DN Sports Editor CORNING — The Corning Cardinals boys basketball team staged a third-quarter surge to keep the visiting Central Valley Falcons at bay Thursday at the 12th annual Corning Shootout tournament. The Cards downed the Falcons 46-32 at Corning High School, kept their unbeaten streak alive at 13-0 and earned a spot in their tournament's semifinal round. Corning out scored Central Valley (5-8) 12-4 in the third quarter after going into halftime with a 20-16 lead. The Cards jumped to an 8-0 run to start the third period, which didn't see the Falcons score until CV senior forward Andrew Albertson sank a field goal with 3:15 left to play in the quarter. Corning's second-half performance contrasted most of their first, where they scored just six points in the first quarter. With Central Valley down 17-16 late in the second period but enjoying some success pushing the tempo with a smaller lineup on the floor, the Cards' 6-foot-6 junior star Michael Shoemaker denied a go-ahead Falcons layup attempt with an emphatic, crowd-pleasing block in transition. The Falcons wouldn't regain a lead from then on. Shoemaker finished the contest with 16 points and 15 rebounds. The Cards took a 32-20 lead to the fourth quarter, where Corning outpaced the Falcons 14-12 to end the game. Shoemaker, who led all scorers, dropped six points in the period, followed by four from junior guard Joey Bolinger and senior forward Trevor Skousen. Skousen finished the game with six points and three boards. Corning junior forward Nick Hoag also put in a strong effort and totaled eight points and 11 rebounds. Junior guard Chayce Maday finished with the contest with six points. The Cards resume play at 8 p.m. today at Corning High School, where they will face Anderson or Durham. The 49ers brought him in to compete with the struggling David Akers. SANTA CLARA (AP) — Billy Cundiff, sporting a crisp new white No. 6 jersey, had an impressive first day of practice with the San Francisco 49ers while kicking alongside struggling veteran David Akers as coach Jim Harbaugh closely watched. Cundiff signed a one-year contract Tuesday with the NFC West champion Niners (11-4-1) to compete with Akers as Harbaugh and his staff determine who will handle the kicking duties for San Francisco in the NFC divisional playoffs Jan. 12 at Candlestick Park. The 32-year-old Cundiff, who missed a potential tying 32-yard field goal in the closing seconds of the AFC championship game that sent New England to the Super Bowl last season instead of the Baltimore Ravens, connected from as far out as 55 yards Thursday afternoon while using a portable holder. He was 10 of 12 overall, including 7 for 8 with Andy Lee holding. Akers went 16 for 21 in an unofficial media count during the open portion of practice. While Akers and Cundiff went about their jobs with no time for small talk, general manager Trent Baalke briefly chatted with Cundiff as the newcomer walked down the field to work on kickoffs. At one moment, Harbaugh walked nearly a full field to shag footballs under the uprights. Akers twice missed wide right from 43 yards and again on a 48-yard try, while also coming up short from 52 and 53 yards. For a franchise determined to take the next step and reach this year's Super Bowl after coming so close last season, Harbaugh is serious about finding a kicker he can count on — even if his choice of Cundiff is puzzling to some who remember his devastating miss for Harbaugh's big brother, John, and the Ravens a year ago. Yet Cundiff tried out once in late November and again this week, and got his chance. Akers, who made 44 of 52 attempts in his sensational 2011 season, is just 29 for 42 this year. The six-time Pro Bowler and 15-year veteran is only 7 for 13 from 4049 yards. He did connect from 63 yards in a season-opening win at Green Bay when the ball bounced off the crossbar in through the uprights.
