CHICO There's no question that Chico State University has a drinking problem, campus president Paul Zingg said Thursday. That can be seen in the five alcohol-related student deaths that occurred in the last five months, he said in a phone interview. Not all five were Chico State students. Next week, campus and community leaders will issue a call to action, he said. It will be a written statement that will be circulated, probably at least in part through newspaper ads, he said. It will kick off a campaign to find solutions to the problem of excessive, dangerous drinking. Next semester, he said, a summit meeting will be held on campus, involving educators, community lead- ers, students, parents and others. The first step is understanding the problem, he said. From there, strategies will need to be developed. At this point, there's not much that can be said about possible solutions, although they could involve creating higher academic expectations, he said. This is not a campaign to ban alcohol it's not a temperance movement, the president said. It's a responsibility movement. If we succeed, it's in the good interest of the community. We will reduce the ugliness and the tragic, too. Alcohol abuse in Chico is nothing new, Zingg noted. It came to the forefront when President Robin Wilson ended a week of revelry known as Pioneer Days and again when action was taken to greatly tone down See ABUSE, page 9A Calif. man posts suicide note on Facebook HUGHSON (AP) A Central California man died after posting a suicide note on Facebook and then driving his car onto railroad tracks about an hour later, as friends and family frantically tried to get in touch with him. Antjuan Miguel Colvin, 21, was struck by a train going about 75 mph in Hughson on Christmas night and pronounced dead at the scene, Stanislaus County sheriffs Sgt. Anthony Bejaran told the Modesto Bee (http://bit.ly/Vbowd4 ). His death has shocked family and friends, who responded with concern when they saw the posting on Colvins Facebook page. In it, the Waterford resident thanked family and friends for the impact they had on his life, but said he could no longer take living. I called his phone like 100 times, said Olivia Johnson, 22, who has known Colvin since she was a little girl. I called his sister, messaged his girlfriend, called them to (find out) if they knew what was going on. I dont understand why he would do this. Some people who saw the post wondered whether Colvin was joking. Its horrible for the conductor and horrible for the family, who will always have to remember Christmas Day as a day they lost a family member, Bejaran said. I cant imagine that. Colvins car was parked in a lighted rail- road crossing when it was hit by a train headed from Bakersfield to Sacramento, Amtrak spokeswoman Christina Leeds said. Three of the 98 passengers on board suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene, according to the sheriffs department. Colvin, who had worked for the past few months at a sporting goods store, was always smiling and knew how to make people laugh, Johnson said. But Savanna Callahan, 24, his former girlfriend, said his smile could hide doubt and depression, something Colvin himself referred to in a picture with a quote that he posted on his Facebook page in November. I hide all of my problems behind my smile, the quote read. Behind my smile is a world of pain. You think you know me, but you have no idea. Information from: The Modesto Bee, http://www.modbee.co m The Daily News office will be closed for the Christmas Holiday, Monday, Dec. 24, Tuesday Dec. 25 & for New Years Holiday Monday, Dec. 31, Tuesday, Jan. 1 Advertising deadline for Tuesday editions is noon the previous Friday.
