Emily McEnaney set the tone right from the start with a leadoff triple and the Lady Spartans rattled off three first inning runs. But it was a 5-run sixth inning that highlighted the team effort. Brittany Fletcher led off the inning with a walk and Kym Perino was called upon to pinch run. Krista Rodriguez laid down a bunt that the Paradise defense botched and Perino alertly moved to third base. Jerilynn Purcell then pushed a bunt past the pitcher and first baseman to score Perino and put runners on first and second base. Aubrie Lair laid down a sacrifice to move the runners over and then Bailey Dagen beat out a drag bunt to lead the bases. Haley Matheson ripped a single to score one run and then McEnaney scored two more on one of her four hits in the game. Megan McColpin added an RBI sacrifice fly. The only Lady Spartan not to contribute in in the inning was Haley Harris, but she homered and drove in three runs during the other six innings. Spartans baseball Red Bluff committed 11 errors and struck out eight times, Tuesday, and fell 10-6 at Paradise. “We did not pitch well, did not hit well and we couldn’t catch the ball,” coach Joe Gallaty said. The loss comes a week after the Spartans beat the Bob- cats 14-4 and a day before today’s Eastern Athletic League showdown with Pleasant Valley. “We did everything you don’t want to do,” Gallaty said. Red Bluff fell to 9-3 in the EAL. Pleasant Valley entered Tuesday 9-2 and Shasta was 9-3. The Spartans play at Pleas- ant Valley, today at 4 p.m. and close at Shasta on Friday. It’s not often players go to visit the opposing dugout after a game, espe- cially after a 20-0 pounding, but a cou- ple of Liberty Christian softball players did just that Tuesday. They just had to tell Mercy’s start- ing pitcher that they found her to be an inspiration. Natasha Czajka took the compli- ment with a smile, one that was hard for her opponents to see the previous two hours when it was caged in behind a mask. After breaking her jaw earlier in the season, Czajka is back on the mound — although with some added protec- tion — and her Lady Warriors are back to winning ways. After a 2-7 start to the season com- pounded by the loss of Czajka for four games, the Lady Warriors have rattled off six straight wins and on Monday clinched a share of the Tri-Cities “Our hitting has improved a lot,” Czajka said of what has been the dif- ference during the second half of the season compared to the first. While her battery mate, Benicia Grace, agreed, the senior catcher also listed better defense and more strike- outs as reasons why the Lady Warriors are now a game away from a perfect run through league play. Of course those strikeouts are com- ing from the lefty Czajka, who picked up six more of them against Liberty Christian. In five innings she gave up three hits, walked one and had plenty of run support. Mercy scored five runs in the first inning without a hit, behind six Liberty Christian walks and a hit batsman. Then they followed it up in the sec- ond inning by sending 16 batters to the plate to score 10 more runs. Diana Van Ert, Ariana Ramos and Gabriel Reynoza each had RBI dou- Reynoza picked up another RBI single during the third inning and Krys- tal Bennett also drove in a run as Mercy expanded out to an 18-0 lead. In the fourth inning, Mercy tacked on two more runs, once again behind a Reynoza RBI. For coach Tito Cervantes the growth in his team has been noticeable. “As time progresses, they get better and better,” he said. Mercy entered Tuesday’s game tied for the seventh seed in the Division 5 playoffs. With a berth clearly locked up, the attention has shifted to beating Red- ding Christian on Thursday. “We want to get a better seeding,” Czajka said. Already being a tough team for opposing players to root against, they’re becoming a tough team to play against as well. “It’s nice to see a comeback story,” Cervantes said.
