He had been a consultant to the 1942 musical biography, which earned James Cagney an Oscar as master showman Cohan, and Warner Bros. shifted the release from July 4th (when Cohan actually was born, just as the song "Yankee Doodle Dandy" says) to the preceding May to ensure that he would see it. One irony, though, is that Cohan wanted someone else to play him ... namely, Fred Astaire, who turned down the part because he felt he had a much different dance style.
