Sam Aanestad of Grass Valley was burned up over an Internet site that attacked him. Aanestad, who recently retired from a long career as an oral surgeon, got over being mad months ago. But it wasn't until he received a formal apology on Wednesday that he felt the matter was resolved. Back in May, Aanestad was one of eight Republican candidates vying for the 1st Congressional District seat that was up for grabs because Rep. Wally Herger decided to retire. Among the primary election candidates were then-state Sen. Doug LaMalfa, R-Richvale (who ultimately was elected to Congress), and Michael Dacquisto of Redding. Around 1 p.m. Thursday a 56-year-old woman called the Tehama County Sheriffs Office to report she saw two people parked near the railroad tracks. The man and woman were rolling up wire and placing it into the bed of a red Dodge dually pickup. Sheriffs logs describe the truck as a newer four-door model. Deputies responded to the location and discovered copper wire that controls the crossing arms had been stolen from the poles running alongside the tracks. A California Northern Railroad representative said there was no immediate danger. The copper wire is valued at $1 per foot. In November the department received two similar reports of copper wire theft. One involved nearly 13,000 feet of wire along the tracks between Gallagher and Gyle roads north of Corning. The second was in the Capay area south of Corning. Similar thefts have been reported in Glenn County in recent months. News tip? Call 527-2151 Take notice, Tehama County baseball fans.
