What do you get when you mix shaving
cream, glue, contact lens solution, baking
soda, blue paint and water?
Many people's first guess is probably, "A
MESS!"
A mess or not, Annallen Blaich doesn't care.
To the 8-year-old third grader at Vandergriff
Elementary in Fayetteville, it's SLIME, and it's
just plain fun.
"It's squishy and stretchy and makes
bubbles," she explained. "It's cool."
Annallen's adults gave their daughter a
SLIME kit for Christmas last year and the
science savvy kid ran with it.
"I started watching videos and figured it
out," she said. "I make Fluffy SLIME and
Glitter SLIME and Toothpaste SLIME and
Regular SLIME. I like the Fluffy SLIME because
it's so soft and sometimes it turns metallic."
SLIME had its humble beginnings,
on Double Dare, a longtime
favorite kid's show on Nickelodeon.
Losing game show contestants and
celebrities were covered in the green
goo to everyone's delight. Today, SLIME
has taken on a life of its own and created a
monster craze around the globe.
Annallen is riding the SLIME wave and
offered to let Official Kids Mag in on some of
her SLIME secrets.
"You have to stir it really well so it will
stick," she advised. "You can put in fake snow,
shaving cream, metallic powder, food dye,
toothpaste, soap and paint if you want."
Annallen said making SLIME isn't dangerous,
just messy. Her first SLIME experiment
didn't go well, but that didn't deter her.
"I got a slime kit for Christmas," she
said. "The activator didn't work at all.
I experimented. The basic ingredients
are glue and an activator. I use saline
(contact) solution and baking soda.
It really works."
With so many SLIME recipes
and formulas available today, you
might think it would be hard for
an 8-year-old budding scientist
to decide on a favorite. Not for
Annallen.
"I like Blue Fluffy SLIME," she
said, without hesitation. "My parents like to
play with it. It's fun."
