2A Daily News Friday, December 21, 2012 Community people&events Military Nathaniel Kersey Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Nathaniel L. Kersey, a 2006 graduate of Red Bluff High School, and Sailors from the Los Angeles-class fast-attack submarine USS Cheyenne (SSN 773) departed Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam for a scheduled six-month deployment in the Western Pacific region. Kersey joined the Navy in July 2006. The crew has anxiously waited for the day to deploy after having spent months preparing and training for the missions they will soon undertake. From different weather patterns to deployed operational tasking, Cheyenne will face many challenges during deployment that are not normally encountered in the local operating area. Along with accomplishing the mission, the deployment will provide an opportunity to gain experience for many on the crew to include watchstanding, and submarine qualifications. Commissioned September 1996, USS Cheyenne is the third ship of the United States Navy to be named for Cheyenne, Wyoming, and is one of the most capable attack submarines in the world. She can launch Harpoon and Tomahawk missiles as well as Mark-48 torpedoes. Military Micheal Prasadi Army Spec. Micheal P. Prasadi was part of a U.S. Army Pacific task force that participated in training near Sendi, Japan with the Japanese Ground Self Defense Force. The training was part of an annual bilateral exercise between American and Japanese forces called Yama Sakura. The exercise focuses on the development and refinement of the JGSDF and U.S. Army Pacific by exchanging ideas, tactics, techniques and experiences while building new and lasting friendships. It is one of the foundations of U.S. and Japanese defense cooperation, and is U.S. Army Pacific's premier bi-lateral command post exercise. Both forces serve a support role to civil governments and agencies and must be able to work efficiently with organizations, that may have dissimilar operating habits or procedures. Prasadi is an information technology specialist assigned to the 30th Signal Battalion at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. He has served in the military for eight years. The Specialist is the son of Parveen Buchanan of Modesto, Sue Nand Kumar and Arbeen Nand, both of Salida, and Dinesh Prasadi of Red Bluff. Prasadi graduated in 2005 from Thomas Downey High School, Modesto. SECRET WITNESS 529-1268 Top diets for the year Its the most wonderful time of the year; tis is the time for end-ofyear lists. Soon we shall (whether we want to or not) know the Top Songs/Movies/Books/News Stories of the Year. TV hosts will interview the "Most Influential Celebrities." In the past, publications have gone so far as to post a compilation of lists ranging from "Top Happiest Endings of the Decade" to "Worst Predictions" (which includes "A particle accelerator will end the world"). Therefore, in honor of the list spirit, I shall now bound confidently on to the bandwagon and provide in no particular order a compilation of some the most bizarre diets upon which I have the misfortune to stumble. (Yes, they are all real.) Let us commence with the COOKIE DIET. One eats one meal per day that must consist of six ounces of protein, as well as at least six of a unique type of cookie each day, for a grand total of 800 calories; about one-third the required intake to maintain a healthful body. Lose your weight and get rid of that pesky hale and hearty glow all at once! But, mmm-mmm-mmm, sure tastes great! This proves that eating cookies to lose weight makes about as much sense as getting stabbed in the eye to forget about your earache. After a long week, I plead guilty that a part of me welcomes the SLEEPING BEAUTY DIET. The not-so-fantasy concept is: "If you aren't awake, you aren't eating."
