With the start of a new year and a new quarter, our chapter strived to engage in many philanthropies and to represent Alpha Sigma Phi as the most outstanding fraternity we can be. One way we accomplish this goal is by increasing our participation in philan- thropy and service throughout the UW Greek system. With charity being one of the five values of our fraternity, philanthropic partici- pation is important to us and vitally important to the people we are helping. Two thousand eighteen has been filled with our annual Alpha Sigma Phi Talisman Rose Queen philanthropy, plus we participated in sorority philanthropies including Alpha Phi's Phear Factor, Kappa Delta's Shamrock Shootout, and Alpha Gamma Delta's annual Mr. Greek. Thanks to the efforts of the Rose Queen chair Eric White and the brothers of Alpha Sigma Phi, our annual Talisman Rose Queen philanthropy went off without a hitch this year. With participation from wonderful sororities like Alpha Chi Omega, Alpha Delta Pi, Alpha Xi Delta, Chi Omega, and Delta Gamma, we were able to raise over $2,200. All the money we raised went to an organiza- tion we hold dear to our hearts, Strong Against Cancer, a foun- dation that conducts research on how to combat pediatric cancer at Seattle Children's Hospital. After much deliberation, the Mu chapter selected Clara Herrera of Alpha Delta Pi to be our 2018 Talisman Rose Queen. We are very excited to have Clara repre- sent our fraternity as our Rose Queen, but we would like to give an honorable mention to another contestant, Julia Loyd of Alpha Chi Omega, who raised over $1,000 in her fund-raising campaign. Over the span of winter quarter, we were lucky enough to participate in many different philanthropy events, raising money for a great number of deserving charities and foundations. In February we competed in Alpha Phi's Phear Factor where our vice president Raffy Mestichella and freshman Jacob Anson competed and raised money for the Alpha Phi foundation. Next, we played in Kappa Delta's Shamrock Shootout basketball tournament where we unfortunately got eliminated in a close one-point game against Phi Gamma Delta. However, we were still lucky enough to contribute towards the Seattle Children's Prevent Child Abuse and Outreach program. Lastly, we took part in one of the largest philanthropies at UW, Alpha Gamma Delta's Mr. Greek. This year one of our freshman, Ethan Finkel, volunteered and put on an excellent performance which raised over $1,000 for the Mr. Greek philanthropy. Mr. Greek, which we are so lucky to be invited to participate in, raises money for three charities–Feeding America, Meals on Wheels, and Treehouse for Kids. In spring quarter Mu participated in as many philanthropies possible, as well as put on our own philanthropy, Phite for Life, which is a soccer tournament raising money for Strong Against Cancer. We also participated in Delta Gamma's Anchor Splash with brother Deter Hudson raising money for Service for Sight and Aid to the Blind. Mu teams up with top sororities to raise big dollars for charity By Philanthropy Chairman Kevin Ting '17 Cultivating a rich culture in Mu Chapter that prepares brothers and the chapter for the future In an era of changes within Greek communities across the nation, my primary goal as president is to maintain the values, rituals, brotherhood experience, and rich history of Alpha Sigma Phi at the University of Wash- ington. I am honored to be chosen as the HSP. There have been many great men and leaders in this position before me. It is both a challenging and exciting time to be the president of Alpha Sigma Phi. Many external factors need to be considered and weighed more than ever. Through attending more IFC sponsored events and engaging within our community I strive to have Alpha Sigs be leaders in the Greek community. Internally, Alpha Sigs is as strong as ever and it is an exciting time to be the president of our chapter because there are many important events and campaigns underway at The Old Gal. Witnessing the progression of the plan to renovate and refurbish our historic building through the capital campaign has been especially exciting. I am amazed by the amount of work done by our corporate board and support from alumni from all eras. I hope to reflect their dedication and work to help future undergraduates by promoting a greater sense of appreciation for our historic house. One of my main goals is to have The Old Gal be a home away from home–a place where memories are made and cherished. I am working closely with the brotherhood chairs to organize more events which allow bonding between the brothers. Additionally, I strive to cultivate a culture within the fraternity which prepares our members for the challenges they will face upon graduating college. I consider Alpha Sigs to be a very diverse house. We have members coming from all backgrounds with many different interests and fields of study. I hope to promote this diversity and create a culture which supports our differences, using each other to learn and grow. I think interacting with so many different individuals, and learning from each other, is a great experience you cannot find anywhere else. Expanding this goal from our house to our community is also important. I want our house to engage in more events, philanthropies, and an overall greater role in our community. My goal is for Alpha Sigs to be leaders, whether it is in extracurricular activities members engage in, grades, or as a role model for other houses to look to. I am excited to serve The Old Gal for the next year and I cannot wait to see all that is accomplished! by Nathan Jensen '17 MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT MESSAGE FROM THE PHILANTHROPY CHAIR
