M o o r e s A u t o s I n c M o o r e s A u t o s I n c . c o m . c o m The Griffi th Rutherford Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) is pleased to announce the winners of the Southeast Division (7 southeastern states) and National levels of judging of the 2017-2018 Junior American Citizens Contest (JAC). This is an annual contest sponsored by the Griffi th Rutherford Chapter to promote good citizenship, history, and patriotism. The National contest's theme for the 2017-2018 school year was "100th Anniversary of WW I - Service on the Homefront". The Griffi th Rutherford Chapter sponsors the JAC Contest for grades 3rd through 8th grades in public, private, charter, and home school situations. The students in 3rd through 5th grades could choose to compete in one or more contest areas which included designing a stamp, drawing a poster, writing original poetry, writing a short story, producing a banner, submitting a photo essay, or conducting and writing about a community service project completed in 2017. Those students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades could compete in one or more categories, which included writing poetry, writing a short story, submitting a photo essay or conducting and writing about a community service project. The local part of this annual contest begins in August and ends in November, with the national part of the contest results available in late April or May. This year the JAC Contest received 628 entries completed by 635 of students from elementary and middle school situations. The following fi fteen fi rst place winners in thirteen entries at the State JAC Contest level, from the Griffi th Rutherford Chapter, were sent on for judging at the Southeast Division level late in February: in Short Story- 3rd grade Mia Pittman-Rutherfordton Elementary, 5th grade Brandt Herndon-Trinity Christian School, 8th grade Damian Baynard-R-S Middle School; in Poem - 4th grade Ben Carpenter-Rutherfordton Elementary; in Community Service – 5th grade Brook Jarrell-Forrest W. Hunt Elementary; in Photo Essay – 5th grade Faith Porter-Forrest W. Hunt Elementary, 8th grade Grier Hodge- R-S Middle School; in Banner – 5th grade Jia Wilkerson, Chloe Harris, and J.R. Bryant- Trinity Christian School; in Poster – 3rd grade Micaela Jones-Rutherfordton Elementary, 4th grade Rain Mellon-Sunshine Elementary; and in Stamp Design – 3rd grade Isabella Gierum-Lake Lure Classical Academy, 4th grade Mikaila Hall-Rutherfordton Elementary, and 5th grade Savannah Stone-Pinnacle Elementary. We are pleased to announce that eight of ou r fi rst-place winners in six entries did receive fi rst place ratings for their entries at the Southeast Division Level of judging. In addition, The Griffi th Rutherford Chapter would like to announce the results of the National Junior American Citizens contest which were recently made available to us. Certifi cates and medal awards of the National JAC judging have been awarded to fi ve entries produced by seven entrants. This year the winners from Rutherford County are 5th grader Brandt Herndon 1st place in Short Story, 8th grader Damian Baynard 1st place in Short Story, 5th graders Jia Wilkerson, Chloe Harris and J.R.
