Friday, 9am – 3pm Under the Lease Agreement between Quartzsite and CAWCD, the 1,070 af of Colorado River water is proposed to be leased for an initial term of 25 years with the ability to extend for an additional 25 years. The district and Quartzsite sought a recommendation from the Arizona Department of Water Resources. Department director Tom Buschatzke says it won't support the lease because Quartzsite hasn't put the water to beneficial use. The conservation district says the decision is disappointing. At his Town Manager's Meeting last week, Jim Ferguson told members of the community the decision "is not a delay in the process, but it will affect our decisions. We are continuing to look at options and costs to determine if this is what it falls back to. What would be the most effective cost involved and how are we going to pay for it. If you're going to make an improvement, you're going to have to pay for it." Ferguson added, "I've seen projects started in the 70's that took decades to be completed. We are not ignoring our options." The lease still can be submitted to the U.S. Department of the Interior for a final say. A group of ladies getting together to "do lunch" sounded like a great idea to organizer Lynda Goldberg and her friends last summer. Well, the ladies have been gathering the 1st Tuesday of the month for lunch at various local restaurants ever since. The ladies order off the menu and share a little bit about themselves or current events. It's been a great way for newcomers to meet others. In attendance to June's lunch were County Supervisor Holly Irwin, Quartzsite Council Members Loretta Warner, Starr BearCat and Lynda Goldberg. Also in attendance were three candidates: Delina Disanto for US Congress #4, J'aime Morgaine for AZ Senate #5, and Mary McCord Robinson for AZ Rep 5. July's lunch will again be held at Grubstake Grill at noon. Women Candidates running for local offices will arrive early, starting at 11am, to answer any questions on topics of interest or concern. The Grubstake is located at 725 N. Central (Hwy. 95), Quartzsite.
