Today, harmony can be anything from lessening hos- tilities to increasing tolerance to co- operation to fellowship and beyond. This class has created quite a bit of discussion between participants online. I have learned so much, and hope we all work together for a better world. It's not an easy process, with but we all can participate in making a better community and world. "Bridges don't fall from the sky; they don't rise up from the ground. People build them." ~ Eboo Patel With so much discourse in our so- ciety, I agree with Bergmann when he said, "there is nothing wrong with having strong beliefs unless our love for one thing turns into hate for an- other." Extremism, strong repulsion and hate never lead to an increase in societal harmony. Recognizing that we don't know everything about any- thing can help us become more hum- ble and open to others. We can't change the world, even if we wanted to. The world is not ours to control. Bergmann said, "We can only control three things in life: Our thoughts, words, and actions. But with those three things, we can infl u- ence the world around us." We can start right here in our little commu- nity, by opening our hearts to others, helping those in need, volunteering; instead of complain, seek to fi nd a so- lution. We're all in this together! But to befriend the one who regards himself as your enemy is the quintessence of true religion. The other is mere business." - Gandhi DESERT MESSENGER Quartzsite's FREE Community Paper Proud to be a Quartzsite Licensed Business 928-916-4235 O T - E T! JULY 5 Town of Quartzsite invites every- one to attend the next meeting of Neighborhood Watch at 6:00 PM, on THURSDAY, JULY 5th, 2018, at the Quartzsite Com- munity Center. Chief William Ponce said he looks forward to working with the resi- dents to create a safer community. Launched in 1972, Neighbor- hood Watch counts on citizens to organize themselves and work with law enforcement to keep a trained eye and ear on their communities, while demonstrating their pres- ence at all times of day and night. Sponsored by the National Sher- iffs' Association (NSA), the Nation- al Crime Prevention Council says, "Neighborhood watch is one of the oldest and most effective crime prevention programs in the coun- try, bringing citizens together with law enforcement to deter crime and make communities safer." For more information contact the Quartzsite Police Department at 928-927-4644. I have been participating in an on- line course this month called Work- ing Together Towards Harmony, because I'm tired of seeing people ex- press so much hatred and anger. The instructor, Gudjon Bergmann, is an author, teacher, and interfaith min- ister based in Central Texas. Berg- mann writes engaging fi ction about personal development and spiritual- ity. His approach is both philosophi- cal and emotional in nature. His pri- mary goal is to facilitate an honest and open dialogue, something our society seems to have been struggling with recently. I love online learning, as I can work at my own pace. When I get "stuck" on a certain topic, I can take a break and return when I feel ready to accomplish more. The dictionary meaning of the word harmony is, "the quality of forming a pleasing and consistent whole." A symphony orchestra represents har- mony in pluralistic society. Musical instruments of all shapes and sizes "No one knows everything about anything." ~ Leonard Swidler DEADLINE : WED.
