A new thriller takes a look at what might happen if people had the ability to live out their dreams in virtual reality. Sarah Shahi ("Fairly Le- gal") stars as former hos- tage negotiator and human behavior expert Mara Kint, who's recruited to help when an immersive virtual reality program works a little too well in "Reverie," pre- miering Wednesday, May 30, on NBC. The high-concept drama was created by Mick- ey Fisher of "Extant" fame, and is produced by Steven Spielberg's ("Jaws," 1975) Amblin Entertainment. Kint was once a cop who left the force to become a college professor after the unimaginable loss of her sis- ter and niece. Dennis Haysbert ("24") portrays Kint's old boss, one-time po- lice chief Charlie Ventana, who asks her to help users who've become trapped in an innovative game devel- oped by the company where he works. "Reverie is a place where the impossible becomes pos- sible," Ventana explains in the show's trailer. "You're put inside a waking dream of your own design. The prob- lem is, some of our users have decided that life in Rev- erie is better than the one out here." Developed by Alexis Bar- rett (Jessica Lu, "Awkward"), the completely customizable virtual reality program known as Reverie allows us- ers to access an unprecedent- ed VR experience through a simple neurotransmitter im- planted in their bodies. Dream specialist Paul Ham- mond (Sendhil Ramamurthy, "Heroes") works alongside Barrett to design factory pre- sets and training protocols. Hammond trains Kint to use the program in the hopes she can draw the users back out into the real world. When people who have tried Rever- ie don't want to return to their real lives, their bodies become comatose. This unex- pected consequence con- cerns Department of Defense official Monica Shaw (Kath- ryn Morris, "Cold Case"), who's interested in the Rev- erie program. As Kint struggles to guide each rogue user back to the light of their real lives, she begins to realize that saving others may help her heal the wounds brought on by the deaths of her loved ones. As technology becomes more advanced, "Reverie" offers viewers a fascinating window into what might be, but it isn't exactly a new idea. A number of television series have looked at the downside of getting exactly what you want — or, at least, what you think you want. ABC's classic "Fantasy Island," as well as more con- temporary series such as HBO's "Westworld," have served up cautionary tales about being granted one's ultimate wishes. Interesting- ly, "Reverie's" premise smacks of recent Spielberg film "Ready Player One" (2018), in which people use a virtual reality program to es- cape the real world. It's a tall order for just 10 episodes, but luckily "Rever- ie" boasts serious players both in front of the cameras and behind the scenes. Fisher was a relatively unknown writer when he won a screenwriting contest with his script for ABC's "Extant," which was then picked up by Amblin Entertainment, the same company that produc- es the new NBC series. Unlike Fisher, the stars of "Reverie" should be familiar to TV fans. After studying the- ater at Southern Methodist University, Shahi moved from Texas to California and land- ed roles in "Alias," "Daw- son's Creek," "Supernatural" and "The Sopranos." She had a recurring role in the ac- claimed Showtime series "The L Word," and nabbed her first leading role in a prime-time television series as Det. Dani Reese in "Life" on NBC. She later moved on to the leading role in "Fairly Legal," which aired from 2011 to 2012 on USA Net- work. More recently, she ap- peared in "Chicago Fire" and "Person of Interest."
