We realized teachers do this on a daily basis, and it's been a while since I've tried to keep the attention of a large group of kids. I have to say our kids are totally amazing! They were curious and open to learning. They even paid attention to the short fi lms showed! I witnessed fi rst hand our teach- ers being compassionate towards the children, jumping in to help when needed, and going the extra mile for their students. While getting lunch ready, I showed a beautiful nature fi lm, just to fi ll the time. But when the fi lm ended, the students pleaded, "Play it again!" I was pleasantly sur- prised by their request, and of course, replayed the video. It was such an honor to be witness to the wonder- ful attitudes of our local students. I am very grateful to all of our teachers who work so hard, with all the chal- lenges they face on a daily basis. I encourage everyone to support our teachers as they stand strong for our students. Show them your support by wearing REDforED and attend your local scholl board meetings. MAY 3 Town of Quartzsite invites every- one to attend the next meeting of Neighborhood Watch at 6:00 PM, on THURSDAY, MAY 3, 2018, at the Quartzsite Community Center. Chief William Ponce said he looks forward to working with the resi- dents to create a safer community. Launched in 1972, Neighbor- hood Watch counts on citizens to organize themselves and work with law enforcement to keep a trained eye and ear on their communities, while demonstrating their pres- ence at all times of day and night. Sponsored by the National Sher- iffs' Association (NSA), the Nation- al Crime Prevention Council says, "Neighborhood watch is one of the oldest and most effective crime prevention programs in the coun- try, bringing citizens together with law enforcement to deter crime and make communities safer." For more information contact the Quartzsite Police Department at 928-927-4644. Arizona teachers sure are in the headlines today! With funding dol- lars actually lower than it was back in 2008, Arizona teachers are taking a stand for their students. It may not look that way to some observers, but talk to any teacher striking and feel their passion and concern for their students. Talk to any school board member and you'll hear the chal- lenges of trying to make more cuts from this year's budget. It's a diffi - cult discussion, but one that we all should be having. The morning after the teachers' vote to walk out, our local Parks & Rec vol- unteer board had planned an Earth Day event for local kids. Needless to say, we all were a bit anxious, waiting to hear if the event could happen. I was grateful for the news that the walkout would wait a week. But you know what Woody Allen said, "If you want to make God laugh, just tell him your plans!" As it was, the volunteers had to "be like the willow" and go with the "A good teacher, like a good entertainer first must hold his audience's attention, then he can teach his lesson." ~ John Henrik Clarke DEADLINE : WED.
