Standard Bearer The Spring 2018 Eta Chapter of Sigma Chi at the University of Mississippi O n October 10, 1857, the founders of Sigma Chi determined that they needed to expand the fraternity's reach into the South. In so doing, they chose the University of Mississippi as the location for their fourth chapter. Referred to as the "Standard Bearer of the South," Eta Chapter grew to be the premier Greek chapter at Ole Miss. Eta is a campus and national leader and continues to be involved in all facets of campus life. While there are always a few bumps in the road, Eta continues to strive to be the best in every way. On October 10, 2017, Eta Chapter celebrated our 160th anniversary with a wonderful party at the Old Armory in Oxford, Miss. Part Swap, part Shrimp and Beer, part Derby Days, more than 750 attendees danced through the night and caught up with many old friends and brothers. Will We See Our Next Big Anniversary? 2017 has been a brutal year for fraternities in the United States. Deaths brought on by hazing and alcohol abuse claimed the lives of fraternity men at Penn State, Florida State, Texas State, and LSU. ese senseless deaths have started a conversation on many university campuses about health and safety within Greek life. Some of these conversations include putting an end to the single-sex Greek fraternity system; a thought that would seem impossible to imagine at Ole Miss, but yet these conversations are taking place as many universities do not see support of fraternity life as part of their ongoing charge. e fraternity system has gone through many ups and downs from its initial founding at the College of William and Mary in 1776. To help ensure a safer course for the future, Sigma Chi has developed a new set of guidelines (http://sigmachi. org/policychanges) that all chapters in the fraternity are expected to follow. ese guidelines represent some of the most dramatic changes that we've seen in quite some time. We Need Your Help We as alumni of Eta Chapter can do a better job of leading the men who join our chapter. If you have the time, please reach out to us at etasigs@sigmachiolemiss.com and we will find a job for you within the house corporation or chapter advisor's board. We need volunteers to help with ritual, pledgeship, recruiting, and many other facets of Eta Chapter life. We always look to a brighter future for ourselves and our children; however, the events of this past year and other accidents on college campuses caused by drug and alcohol abuse have taken a deep toll.
