By Joanne Winer Paul Winer, owner of Reader's Oasis Bookstore and local musician has finally had one of his dreams come true. For many years, people have been asking him all kinds of questions about his early years as Sweet Pie and how he came to be one of the most visited characters in this area. Hundreds of photos are taken with customers every week, and his shows around the area are still very popular and lots of fun for everyone. Over the years, several people have talked to him about do- ing a documentary about his life, and several of them even started filming, but for some reason, it never worked out. Several months ago, a young man named Justin Bouchard came to town with his mother and ended up at the book store. They had been looking for a place to stay that would be close to California as they had friends in Los Angeles and wanted to be able to visit. That first visit was the be- ginning of not only a great friend- ship between two men who shared a deep love of music, but was also the beginning of an adventure in filming a documentary that Paul has been dreaming about for years. Justin and his mother got an apartment here and stayed for many months, spending time at the bookstore with Paul and doing lots of interviewing and filming of his story. He copied hundreds of photos in the archives Paul kept, and put together a 2 1/2 hour film that encompasses all of Paul's early years, his poetry, his music, and all the years on the road. There is also his history and some of the special times of his life, people he met, influences on his music, etc. It also talks about his 68 First Amend- ment court cases during his career and gives insight about his life here in Quartzsite and why he loves it here so much. There is also a part of the docu- mentary that covers the birth and eventual death of his daughter Ce- lia narrated by his wife Joanne, and she tells about the pain of losing a child, Celia's Rainbow Gardens, what it means, and how much it has helped people get through their grief by being such a peaceful, spe- cial place. Celia's love of nature and the environment were the inspira- tion for this beautiful Gardens that are visited by hundreds every year. Open house scheduled for April 12 and comment period extended until April 30 Yuma, Ariz. - The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Yuma Field Office Lower Colorado River (LCR) Travel Management Plan (TMP) public scoping period has been ex- tended until April 30. "The original closing date for public scoping is March 14, however; we have decided to extend the public scoping period to April 30, 2018, so the public can have sufficient time to review the route networks and make their scoping comments," said BLM Yuma Field Manager John MacDonald. The public may participate by at- tending an open-house style meet- ing or by reviewing the information online and submitting comments to the BLM. An open house will be held April 12 from 3:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m. at the following location: Ehrenberg Elementary School 49241 Ehrenberg Street Ehrenberg, AZ 85334 During the open house-style meet- ing, maps of the current and poten- tial travel network will be available for review and BLM staff will be available to answer questions and receive comments. Lower Colorado River Travel Management Plan public scoping period extended - again Written scoping comments about the plan will be accepted through April 30. Comments postmarked by this date will be considered in the development of the environmental assessment (EA). Scoping com- ments should be as specific as possi- ble to be most effective.
