KAPPA CHAPTER OF ZETA BETA TAU FRATERNITY AT CORNELL UNIVERSITY | SPRING 2018 EDGECLIFF NEWS THE A s we shared in a statement in February, the Kappa Chapter of Zeta Beta Tau underwent investigation for allegations of violating Cornell University's Recognition Policy. The following outlines these allegations and plan to get the chapter back in line with the standards of Zeta Beta Tau. On January 16, a review board convened to consider the status of Kappa Chapter based on allegations of violating the university's Recog- nition Policy: e.17.b Hazing, Expectations for Membership, and 11. Sexually Abusive Behav- ior. Specifically, allegations were submitted three times during the 2017 year to the Office of Sorority and Fraternity Life (OSFL) indicat- ing the fraternity conducted an activity which encouraged new members to accumulate points by having sexual relationships with women. Members of the review board included Kara Miller, director of OFSL; Justin Goldsman, assistant director and IFC advisor; Allie Brodeur, assistant director and MGLC advisor; Evelyn Ambriz, assistant dean of students in student development and diversity initiatives; Karli Buday, assistant director community education and class pride; Drew Lord, 2017 IFC president; and Paul Russell, 2018 IFC president. Kappa was represented by Chapter President Adam Furhman '20, Chapter Treasurer Chase Jaeger '19, Brotherhood Development Director Daniel Mieteles '20, Zeta Beta Tau Assistant Director of Wellness and Harm Reduction Nancy Schwartz, and me. Recommended Decision After careful consideration of all the information presented before the review board, it was concluded it is likely that this concerning behavior occurred and that there is an opportunity for educational interventions to improve the chapter's culture. Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity will be placed on probationary recognition for a period of two years in addition to a strict action plan. • Chapter leadership will work with OSFL to determine plans regarding an Intervene Status of Kappa Chapter After Allegations of Recognition Policy Violations presentation before the end of the spring 2018 semester. • The chapter will hire a live-in advisor. • The chapter will conduct a walkthrough of the facility to gain an outside perspective of its appearance and the culture it may present to guests. • The chapter will conduct a full chapter brotherhood review, as well as an external review conducted by the national organization. • The chapter will work with OSFL staff to identify local resources such as the Women's Resource Center, The Advocacy Center, or the equivalent to conduct ongoing education. At least one educational program will be held by April 1, 2018. • The chapter must make the current members aware of their full judicial history as outlined in the review board documents by February 1, 2018. • The chapter will work with OSFL staff to determine an acceptable officer transition program by March 15, 2018. • The chapter will have 75% participation in at least two events during Sexual Assault Awareness Week in April at Cornell University. • The chapter must hold monthly meetings with OSFL staff throughout the spring semester to update OSFL on their progress. It is recommended a ZBT staff member join each meeting via phone. Over the next two years, Kappa Chapter of Zeta Beta Tau will work diligently alongside the university and the national fraternity to become the strong, respectable chapter we remember. These allegations grant us the opportunity to grow and reconnect our undergraduate members with what it means to be a Zeta Beta Tau. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out. Fraternally, David Burrows '91 President, Kappa Foundation Inc. (917) 373-6299 dmburrows@optonline.net
