Garage doors have come a long way since their introduc- tion in the 1920s. Today's homeowner has unlimited options with styles, colors and materials. When it comes time to replace those old worn out windows, consider the many styles and colors before making your choice. Cork-backed placemats not only last a long, long time, but they have pretty designs on them too. And they're easy to clean — just wipe with a damp cloth. Today's kitchen gadgets are functional — and pretty, too Collapsible cutting boards, silicone lids, old-fashioned flour sack towels and scoops with colanders come in handy for cooks, but can be displayed in the kitchen when you are not using them. By BECKY BARCLAY bbarclay@newsargus.com Cooking in the kitchen is not like it used to be in your mom's day. There are so many more utensils and gadgets that make food preparation a lot easier. And not only are the gadgets functional, but they are also pretty. Walking through the Inside Shop, you'll find just about everything a cook could want. "One of my favorites is a cutting board that collapses," said owner Janice Whisen- hunt. "You can cut on it, then fold it up and carry it to wherever you need it without spilling what you've just cut. A lot of peo- ple chop on the cutting board on the count- er then have to rake the food off into their hand. "You don't have to with the collapsible cutting board. And it comes in different sizes." She said a square colander with a non- slip handle is one of the best thing the shop has. "It fits into your sink," she said. "Your sink is square and so is the colan- der. I have two of them at my house. One I leave in the sink, and I put cabbage, let- tuce or other items that need to go in the garbage, and when I'm done cooking, I just pour them from the colander into the trash. "So you don't have to use a paper towel and waste money using them. It has a lot of qualities to it that some of the run-of- the-mill colanders don't have." Another unique item for the kitchen is the silicone lid. The lids come in a variety of sizes and colors with different designs on them, making them not only functional, but very pretty. With the silicone lid, you don't need plastic wrap or foil. You just squeeze the lid onto your con- tainer and it seals tightly. You can use it on steel, glass, plastic or ceramic. "You can put the lids in the dishwasher," Whisenhunt said. "You can also put them in the freezer and oven. It is just marvelous. There are also tiny silicone drink covers, which is especially good in our area where we have lots of uninvited insects. "So when you go out onto your patio, you put a silicone lid on your drink and you don't have to worry about the insects." These cutting boards make it easy not to spill what- ever you have just cut because the sides fold in. You take the cutting board to the pan you want to put what you just chopped in and dump it in. And the boards come in various colors. A square colander with a non-slip handle is a popular kitchen item with today's cooks. It fits perfectly into the normal sink, which is also square.
