8 www.DesertMessenger.com March 21, 2018 T D M Quartzsite Museum News We promised to supply the answers to this season's trivia question in this edition, so here they are: 1. Tyson's Well Stage Stop building, which currently houses the Quartzsite Museum was originally a "water works' supplying the much- needed water to travelers and the community, from the well. 2. The well was originally only 14 feet deep. About 125 years later it was increased to 40 feet. 3. The photo in January was of a matchbox holder. This artifact can be seen at the Museum. 4. The "Assay Offi ce" that is now on the grounds of the Museum was moved from the Mariquita Mine, which was north of I-10 and east of Exit 11, west about 5 miles from Quartzsite. It represents a signifi cant part of our history and was used to test gold for purity and quantity, thus establishing value. The gold was then separated using mercury and formed into bars. 5. One of our resident artisans, Joseph Cone', used ironwood to cre- ate dishes and candlesticks, using no electricity. Ironwood is so strong it is now used for bearings for high stress applications such as nuclear submarine propellers! 6. Justice of the Peace Hagley, who was in offi ce from 1947 to 1972 mar- ried over 13,000 couples! His marriage registers are on display at the Museum and families of those couples can come to the Museum to see the entries in the register and get a copy of "their" page. Our season is coming to a close and we will be returning to summer hours the week of March 26. During the summer we are only open on Thursdays from 10 to noon, however our phones and mail are monitored during that time. Thanks to everyone who has supported the Museum this winter by visit- ing, making donations, attending our events and volunteering. We do have a need for volunteers during the summer to help keep the grounds in shape and help operate the offi ce. We continue our computer catalog- ing during the summer as well. If you are in town and willing to help please give us a call. We have a variety of books and postcards relating to Quartzsite that are for sale. We continue to recycle plastic and aluminum, which can be dropped off any time at our front gate collection can. We are a non-profi t historical society. Visiting the Museum is free, al- though donations are always welcome. The Museum is open Wednesday through Sunday, 10 am to 4 pm through March 25, then Thursdays from 10 am to 12. We are located at 161 Main Street (parking in rear). Phone (928)927-5229. E-Mail QHS@TDS.net.
