I know we constantly solicit for your financial assistance. What we have not done a great job of is explaining why. So, I want to spend some time explaining where we are, what we are striv- ing to accomplish and where your contributions go. We have organized our solicitations so that each spring Candlelight issue focuses on sending the undergraduates to Leadership Conferences, PIKE University and Pike National Convention. Our experience has shown us that the greater number of undergraduates who attend these events, the better the Chapter becomes. The fall newsletter focuses on the Beta Phi Foundation: scholarships, tutoring, Homecoming, Old Mas- ters, education-related upgrades to the Chapter House, the Candlelight creation and distribution, and other mailings. YOU, our alumni, have been incredibly generous over the last several years. Your donations allow us to accomplish every- thing listed. Without your tremendous support, we would not be a Smythe Chapter. With continued support, our goal is to have enough money in our investment portfolio so that our annual budget can be self-funded. By creating that kind of financial stability, it allows us to expand all the programs mentioned and add more programs. If anyone is interested in more details, we wel- come your questions. We encourage you to spend some time with the Foundation during one of our meetings. Everything is on the table, discussed and scrutinized so we can be the best possible stewards of your contributions. The 2018 Beta Phi Foundation operating budget is $50,863. Based on what we have forecast for 2018 contri- butions, dividends, and Reunion Day of Giving, we are anticipating a deficit of $17,163. Any def- icit must be paid out of our investment portfolio. As you make contributions, and we gain the sup- port of other alumni, this yearly deficit shrinks. When you donate, you can identify exactly where you want your money to go, to leadership or the general operating fund. I know that many of you who have watched our progress over the last 15–20 years have seen the tremendous improvements in all areas of Beta Phi. We ask that you keep our goals and objectives in mind when you think about your 2018 donations and beyond. Call me or any of the members on the foundation board with any financial questions. Once a Pike, Always a Pike. Sincerely in Phi Phi K A, Joe Conti '85, President, Beta Phi Foundation (715) 498-4498 Spring 2018 Candlelight Beta Phi Chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha • Purdue University Published by the Beta Phi Foundation 97 Y ear s at Pur d u e Beta Phi Foundation aPPreciates Your suPPort Alumni Contributions Allow for ExpAndEd progrAmming Brothers attended the PIKE Leadership Conference in Chicago. T ying in with Joe Conti's report above, I want to offer another way that loyal Purdue Pikes can leave an ongoing legacy to their college fra- ternity: estate planning. The Beta Phi Foundation was established several years ago as a 501(c)(3) federal tax-exempt organization, enabling our Purdue Pike alumni to make donations to the Foundation and enjoy tax deductions for federal income tax purposes. Like other charitable foun- dations, the Beta Phi Foundation can receive tax- deductible gifts of cash, stocks, life insurance, annuities, IRAs, and real estate. Planned giving through one's estate plan is a great way in deter- mining who, what, and how much to give family, charities, and other organizations special to you. A Lasting Gift to Beta Phi There are many options in making the Beta Phi Foundation the beneficiary of part of your estate plan: 1. An unrestricted gift to the Beta Phi Foundation 2. A restricted gift to the Beta Phi Foundation directed toward Chapter leadership training Chapter academic tutoring Academic scholarships Leadership scholarships Financial assistance to undergraduates Study facilities Endowments to underwrite the Foundation's operating budget The Beta Phi Foundation will verify our U.S. IRS Code 501(c)(3) federal tax-exempt organi- zation status for one's lawyers, accountants, or estate planners. And, as a foundation worthy of your faith and investment, the financial records, investments, expenses, and operating policies of the Beta Phi Foundation are reviewed on a regu- lar basis by an independent-auditing firm. The Foundation is governed by 10 directors, none of whom receive monetary compensation for meetings throughout the year. As Beta Phi approaches 100 years on Purdue's campus, producing over 1,800 living alumni, please consider a lasting gift to Beta Phi through your estate plan. Call or e-mail us. We will be pleased to answer your questions and those of your estate team.
