Givens Performing Arts Center
presents Broadway's "Amazing
Grace: e Musical" at UNC-Pem-
broke Tuesday, March 13, at 7:30 p.m.
e musical, written by Christo-
pher Smith and Arthur Giron, is the
stor y of John New ton, the captain of
a slave ship who joins the abolition
movement. New ton is best known
for writing the famous hymn "Amaz-
ing Grace," giving the musical its
name. e stor y includes themes of
romance, rebellion and redemption.
Newton, son of a slave trader,
comes of age in Britain in the 1700s.
He is torn between following in his
father's footsteps and following his
heart and the guidance of his child-
hood sweetheart. It is on the high
seas in the company of his slave,
omas, that Newton faces his reality
and wrestles with his conscience.
"Every audience that sees it has the
same reaction," said Carolyn Rossi
Copeland, producer of the musical.
"ey are moved, they understand
that change is possible for even the
worst of human beings."
North Carolina is one of 27 states
the musical is showing in during its
eight-week tour. e national tour
is led by Gabriel Barre, the original
Broadway director, and Christopher
Gattelli, the original Broadway cho-
reographer.
"My husband is from North Caro-
lina, I've had three daughters go to
school in North Carolina. So, I'm
glad we get to come to North Caro-
lina," said Copeland, adding that the
traveling performance does its best
to replicate the feeling of seeing the
show on Broadway.
"We really worked very hard to
duplicate what people would've seen
on Broadway," she said. "e first act
is one of the most beautiful scenic
acts in theater."
