"It took a lot of people, a lot of time and a lot of years for this to ever happen. That is the truth," Pate said. In the fall of 2004, Wayne County received a $200,000 planning grant from the state legislature for the project, he said. A study was completed, but was left on the shelf for several years. The study suggested the county consider the site where the McFarland building is located on West Ash Street across from the State Employees Credit Union. The second recommended location was the old Cherry Farm dairy operation on Old Smithfield Road. "How I got involved in it was the first year after I was elected (in 2012), Steve (Keen), the chairman, asked me if I would revive this and see if we could get this going," Pate said. "I knew that the first thing I needed to do was to find WAYNE COUNTY COMMISSION CHAIRMAN BILL PATE HAS BEEN A STRONG SUPPORTER AND ADVOCATE FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE MAXWELL REGIONAL AGRICULTURAL AND CONVENTION CENTER, BUT HE IS THE FIRST TO POINT OUT THAT IT COULD NOT HAVE BEEN DONE WITHOUT THE HELP OF MANY PEOPLE.
