Now, thanks to one of the entertainment in- dustry's most promising young stars, the city has a new claim to fame: comedy. Donald Glover ("Commu- nity") returns to prime time as Princeton dropout Earn in the season premiere of "At- lanta," airing Thursday, March 1, on FX. The comedy follows the foibles of Earn as he tries to help his cousin, Al- fred "Paper Boi" Miles (Brian Tyree Henry, "Vice Princi- pals"), manage his rap career. Season 2 of "Atlanta" has been subtitled "Robbin' Sea- son," a reference to the time shortly before the Christmas holidays when there is a spike in the number of robberies in the city. At a Television Critics Association panel, Stephen Glover — Donald's brother and a writer on the series — explained why the title was so poignant for the upcoming season. "It's a very tense and des- perate time," he said. "Our characters are in a desperate transition from their old lives to where they're headed now. And robbin' season is a meta- phor to where we are now." During the first season, Earn struggled to prove he was capable of managing Al- fred's career as Paper Boi en- joyed his first dose of fame. He also tried to prove him- self to Van (Zazie Beetz, "Easy"), his on-again-off- again girlfriend and the mother of his daughter. Meanwhile, Alfred's right- hand man, Darius (Lakeith Stanfield, "Dope"), dished out his unique, if not hilari- ous, brand of stoner humor. Season 1 earned the show accolades from TV critics and fans, thanks to its offbeat hu- mor and unconventional, al- most experimental format. Each episode focused on a different part of the story, as one installment followed Van and another played out as a BET-style program. The inau- gural season earned a num- ber of high-profile nomina- tions and awards, including two Golden Globes: one for Best Television Series — Mu- sical or Comedy, and another for Best Actor in a Television Series — Musical or Comedy. Glover made history in Sep- tember when he became the first black person to win an Emmy for directing a comedy. The evening also netted him an Emmy for Best Actor. Other notable wins for the series include a Writers Guild of America Award for Comedy Series, a Critics Choice Televi- sion Award for Best Actor in a Comedy Series, and an NAACP Image Award for Out- standing Directing in a Come- dy Series. "Atlanta" also won a Peabody Award in the Area of Excellence category. The second season once again offers viewers episodes with a stand-alone feel, but a central story runs through all of them. Stephen Glover re- vealed that the surprising in- spiration behind the format was an animated movie. The popular 1992 direct-to-video feature "Tiny Toons Adven- tures: How I Spent My Sum- mer Vacation" was a series of separate stories that, if watched together, formed a cohesive movie. This, accord- ing to Glover, inspired the writers as they tackled the second season. The writers had a little more time than usual to work on the new installment of the comedy, which first pre- miered in September 2016, and earned a season 2 re- newal that same month. Fans have been waiting patiently for season 2 to drop because of Donald Glover's busy schedule. As a writer, director, actor, comedian, producer, singer, songwriter and rapper, the young performer is a true modern-day Renaissance man. Glover got his big break in writing at the tender age of 23 when Tina Fey ("Saturday Night Live") hired him as a writer for "30 Rock." As an actor, he portrayed Troy Barnes in the NBC comedy "Community," and has ap- peared in the feature films "Magic Mike XXL" (2015), "The Martian" (2015) and "Spider-Man: Homecoming" (2017). Soon, fans will be able to catch him on the big screen as Lando Calrissian in the upcoming "Solo: A Star Wars Story," set to premiere on May 25. As if all of that isn't enough, Glover is also a Grammy-nominated rapper under the pseudonym Child- ish Gambino. That experience in the rap scene likely comes in handy for his work on "Atlanta," which features a core cast of talented up-and-comers, who all return for season 2. The cousins continue to try to climb to the top of the Atlanta music scene in the hopes of improving their lives and the lives of their families. As Pa- per Boi's star rises, he strug- gles to navigate the line be- tween real life and street life. Van and Earn's relationship continues to evolve, and Dari- us delivers his unique brand of wisdom. When the season opens, the crew is back in the city, but things are different. Find out what happens in the sea- son premiere of "Atlanta," airing Thursday, March 1, on FX. Raising the bar: Donald Glover returns in 'Atlanta' Featurestory
