B rothers, friends, and family of the Iota Iota chapter of Sigma Chi, I hope you all had a fantastic holiday season and are gearing up for "TuaThousand18!" I wanted to make you aware of several significant policy changes that will be implemented this year at every ΣΧ chapter across the country. In the wake of an ever-increasing trend of alcohol and hazing-related tragedies in the Greek community, ΣΧ is taking the proactive stance of implementing the following policies by the beginning on the fall 2018 academic calendar: • A prohibition of all hard alcohol from all chapter facilities • A mandate that all chapters start and finish their pledge programs within a five-week period • A mandate that no social events with alcohol may occur while recruitment or pledging operations are active • A mandate that the maximum size for social events will be three guests per member Specific details and FAQs for all of these policy changes can be found at sigmachi.org/policychanges. Please read the details contained there, bearing in mind you will be reading the exact words of the international leadership who deemed these changes as being expeditiously needed. Given that the majority of these policy changes will only impact the undergraduate chapters and membership, I want to clearly point out that some of these will directly impact the alumni, family, and friends of Iota Iota. The alcohol ban during recruitment and pledging applies to everyone visiting the chapter house, meaning that those who visit the house during the early football season will not be able to bring their tailgate/BYOB alcohol inside the property. Once the five-week pledge program is completed, you may enjoy your beer or wine during visits to the house. Please keep in mind that the hard alcohol ban applies to the chapter house, which means everyone—alumni and guests included. Please take the time to read the website content, as I know many of you will have questions related to these changes. If you have direct questions, I will do my best to address them. These new brothers have quickly made an impact, achieving a 3.32 GPA, which ranked them fourth out of 33 IFC new member classes at UA. They are heavily involved in many campus organizations, including the Greek Ambassadors, Freshman Forum, and Student Government Association, to name a few. Several freshmen also hold officer positions in the chapter, and the pledge class is excited to begin contributing as initiated brothers. Raising the Bar in Grades and Leadership As a whole, our chapter achieved a 3.22 GPA, and ranked eighth out of 33 fraternities. Our members are involved in SGA Senate, Culverhouse Investment Management Group, IFC Executive Committee, Greek Programming Board, and countless other student organizations. Our brothers spend ample time volunteering with Al's Pals and Miracle League of Tuscaloosa, and raising money for various causes year-round, most notably through our Derby Days benefiting the local Children's Miracle Network hospital, Children's of Alabama. Second Annual Derby Dash 5K We will hold our second annual Derby Dash 5K in conjunction with Derby Days this spring, and continue to build upon the progress we have made over the last several years. If you will be in Tuscaloosa or the surrounding vicinity, we invite you to attend Derby Dash 5K on Sunday, March 4, at 10 a.m. Recommend a Pledge Do you know of incoming University of Alabama men who live up to our Sigma Chi standard? If so, please submit a recommendation to uasigmachirush@gmail.com or through our website, bamasig.org. Feel free to contact me by email or phone for more information. Iota Iota chapter thanks you for your continued support. We look forward to continuing our chapter's success this spring.
