LAKE AREA COMMUNITY First settled in 1807 by pioneers from Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia, Miller County became an official county in 1837. Named aer former Missouri Governor John Miller, it covers some 592.6 square miles of farms, small towns, rivers and wooded areas. Bordering Lake of the Ozarks, Miller County is also home to steep hills, wide valleys and is the home of Bagnell Dam, the structure responsible for creating the reservoir now known as Lake of the Ozarks. Primarily agriculture in nature, Miller County is also known for its many cattle ranches and having more turkey farms than any other county in the U.S. e county is also a major tourists draw within the state of Missouri, because of its many access points to Lake of the Ozarks and the large number of amenities that serve visitors within the cities of Lake Ozark and Osage Beach. Named for Revolutionary War General Daniel Morgan, it encompasses 597.63 square miles dotted with farms and small towns. e first courthouse built in Morgan County was made of locally harvested logs. It was later replaced by a two-story brick structure. en in 1887, voters agreed to have a new more dignified building constructed in the center of Versailles. at building is still in use today. The county is also home to several wildlife areas, and a number of towns where shopping, restaurants, museums, city parks, playgrounds, theaters and other amenities abound. Miller County Morgan County Originally called the "County of Kinderhook," Camden County encompasses 655.2 square miles of steep hills, narrow valleys, extensive forests, rivers, lakes and some of the most upscale homes in the state. e county was originally named aer the Whig Party candidate Martin Van Buren, who was nicknamed "Old Kinderhook," but was renamed when Van Buren fell from favor because of his refusal to annex the Republic of Texas. Now called Camden County, the area was renamed in honor of England's Earl of Camden in 1841,as the result of a petition signed by a majority of its residents. e most populous county in the Lake Area, Camden County is made up of small towns as well as rural neighborhoods that depend primarily on a tourist-based economy. Camden County is the location of more than 40,000 vacation homes owned by individuals from all over the Midwest. In fact there are so many summer homes in the area that 40 percent of Missourians, who own a second home, own it at Lake of the Ozarks. Camden County is also home to the area's largest school district, Camdenton R-III with a student enrollment that tops 4,000.
