City of Laurie, Missouri "We Care About You" City of Linn Creek, Missouri "Rising to Endless Horizons" e City of Laurie, Missouri began life in 1937 when a man named William Laurie purchased an old building along Missouri Highway 5 to operate as a grocery store and gas station. In 1966, Laurie was incorporated as a city and officially named aer that original storeowner. Laurie has remained the premier shopping and business district for Westsiders since that time. Today, the town is a small city governed by a mayor and Board of Aldermen. e town is divided into two wards with two aldermen elected to represent each ward. e city also serves as a center for the activities for many Westsiders who live outside its limits because of its numberous restaurants, banks, grocery stores, convenience stores, retail outlets and churches. Altogether, there are nearly 200 businesses and five planned subdivisions within the town along with 926 residents. City Hall: 147 S. One of the few Lake Area towns that existed before Bagnell Dam and Lake of the Ozarks was built; Linn Creek was a major port on the Osage River throughout much of the 1800s and into the 20th century. But when Union Electric made the decision to build a hydroelectric plant and flood thousands of acres of the mid-Missouri Ozark valleys, Linn Creek's days were numbered. e town had to be dismantled and moved four miles to its current location on higher ground. Although it had served as the county seat of Camden County prior to the dam's construction, once the town had been moved a decision was made to build a larger more centrally located city to serve as the county seat. Linn Creek then became a bedroom community with a small downtown where a few businesses were located. Today, it's a small quiet town, scattered along both sides of U.S. Highway 54 and boasts a post office, restaurant, small manufacturing plant, veterinary clinic and one of the area's largest industrial parks where a number of manufacturing, trucking and other industrial establishments are located. e town also serves as the home of the Camden County museum and historical society and is the site of a number of festivals and historical events.
