Volunteers are often unsung heroes, said Suzanne Porter, executive director of United Way of Rutherford County, the sponsor of the $1,000 award. "United Way applauds the work of all volunteers who give so generously of themselves," Porter said. "Their time, energy, and compassion are the positive forces that change lives and make people feel valued. They pour their hearts and souls into helping others, and it's a privilege to honor the Volunteer of the Year and all of the volunteers in our community. We extend our utmost appreciation and gratitude for all that you do." Applications for the 2018 Rutherford County Awards for Outstanding Volunteer Service are now available. Nominees can be recognized in these categories: o Individual: An individual volunteer. o Group/Team: A group of two or more people that volunteer together on the same project(s). o Youth Volunteer: A person age 18 or younger who volunteers. o Senior Volunteer: A person 55 or older, and volunteers. o Perseverance in Volunteerism: An individual volunteer who has overcome signifi cant personal obstacles (mental or physical) in order to engage in service to others. o Corporate/ Business Volunteerism: A corporation or business that has made a substantial impact in the community by promoting service to their employees by providing volunteer hours or engaging in other volunteer activities.
