This spring, property owners living adjacent to County open space preserves will receive a brochure about protecting homes from wildfire. It only takes one spark to set off a fire. Creating defensible space and hardening your home dramati- cally increases the chance your house will survive and helps protect firefighters. Maintain defensible space with a 100-foot buffer around your home, as required by law. Harden your home by fire- proofing vents, eaves, roof, deck, windows, and fencing. Screen or enclose rain gutters to prevent the accumulation of plant debris. Learn more at: firesafemarin.org readyforwildfire.org. The majority of property owners adjacent to Marin County open space preserves can maintain defensible space on their own property. Property owners can mow grass in the preserves if necessary to obtain 100 feet of defensible space. Due to sensitive ecosystems, permits are required for properties adja- cent to Ring Mountain and Old Saint Hilary's. For details about obtaining defensible space maintenance permits call the Marin Parks Vegetation and Fire Ecologist at (415) 473-5089.
