February 21, 2018 www.DesertMessenger.com 3 Lynda Goldberg appointed to council Quartzsite Historical Pageant--"A Walk in the Past" set for Feb. 24, 2018 by Joanne Winer Mark your calendars for Satur- day, February 24 at 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. for the Quartzsite Historical Pag- eant--A Walk in the Past. This fun event is being held again at the Hi Jolly Cemetery in the pioneer sec- tion. It will feature many of the "characters" who made up our town from back when it was fi rst started in 1867. Last year we cel- ebrated our 150th birthday of the founding of our town, and because of the seasons running into the fol- lowing year, it was decided that we would do it again this February. If you are interested in the his- tory of this area, you must visit our Tyson Stage Stop Museum on west Main St. Although small by some standards, our little museum is fi lled with all kinds of displays and photos, and memorabilia from ear- ly settlers in this area and lots of in- formation about the mines around here that brought people to this are searching for their riches. Tyson's Well was the place to stop on the route to the gold fi elds in Califor- nia, and many people got this far and decided to stay. Our pioneer cemetery has been one of the most visited places in Arizona next to the Grand Canyon because of the centerpiece of a rock pyramid that was put in as a memo- rial to our famous camel driver Hi Jolly (or Hadji Ali.) He came over with the fi rst group of camels that were brought to America to see if they could become transport ani- mals across the deserts here like A Walk in the Past set for Feb. 24 they were in the eastern part of the world. The experiment was stopped when the Civil War broke out and all the troops had to go back east. Other famous people who are buried in our pioneer cemetery are Buck Conners, who became a famous Hollywood actor playing in many western movies--his little son who also passed away is bur- ied next to him. The Scott fam- ily is very well known in this area for their wonderful contributions to the community over the years. When William Scott met his future wife Angelina he probably never thought that he would end up being one of the biggest families (12 chil- dren--2 died at birth) and that his family would still have decendents here 150 years later! There are also other family names that you might have heard of or seen on street signs around town like Cowell, Kuehn, and Hagely. These were also very important people in our history. All these and more will be played in costume at this fun event. Come on out and spend the after- noon learning about the history of this area and meeting some of our pioneers and local residents who have made the town what it is today. The pageant is free and everyone is welcome. You can reach the pioneer section of the cemetery by going north on Kofa Street just past the Yacht Club to the entrance to the cem- etery on the left side, or by going down Cemetery Road just past the Yacht Club on Main St. and turn- ing right to the cemetery.
