30 WAYNE UNC HEALTH CARE Wayne UNC Health Care is a 316-bed not-for-profit acute care hospital that has been serving Wayne County and surrounding areas for more than 120 years. With more than 1,700 teammates and a medical staff of more than 276 members, Wayne UNC Health Care is committed to delivering high quality, personalized care. The hospital is accredited by the Joint Commission and treats nearly 70,000 patients annually in its emergency department. With more than 9,600 surgeries performed each year, the hospital is in the midst of construction of a new, state–of–the–art surgical department, slated to open in the fall 2019. Wayne UNC Health Care is a leading provider in the areas of Cancer, Neurology, Heart and Vascular, Women's Services, Orthopedics and General Surgery. In addition, the system offers diagnostics, imaging, lab, pharmacy, rehabilitation and therapy services and more. A major area of focus for Wayne UNC Health Care is to improve the health of the communities served. Several programs in the areas of diabetes management, school-based health and occupational health focus on education and prevention. Each year, Wayne UNC Health Care provides on average more than $24 million in community benefit. This includes charity care, un-reimbursed Medicaid expense, education programs and more. In addition, the hospital has developed strong relationships in the area of higher education, including UNC School of Medicine, Campbell University School of Medicine, Wayne Community College, and University of Mount Olive. These partnerships are critical to supporting education, training and recruitment for nurses, clinicians, physicians and advanced practitioners. In 2016, Wayne UNC Health Care joined UNC Health Care under a management services agreement. This relationship enables the hospital to maintain local operations and governance, while at the same time, provides access to world-class research, technologies and expertise. In 2017, Wayne UNC Health Care transitioned its physician group to become part of UNC Physicians Network, joining more than 50 practices and over 250 providers delivering primary care and specialty services to 13 counties throughout North Carolina.
