16 Eric Xavier Dawson plays the saxophone and at the mention of music his usual calm demeanor becomes animated. His passion for music comes through in his performances and his lifestyle. Mention music and Eric Xavier Dawson lights up. As exuberant and animated as he gets on the subject, he is also chill and unencumbered in general. His primary instrument is the saxophone, but his relationship with music was forged early on growing up in Kinston. "I started playing when I was in the sixth grade, and I started off playing keys, I played keys for years," he said. "My dad had all these albums. I kind of got into them, started listening to them — Stanley Turrentine and a whole lot of others. "One saxophonist that stood out for me was Grover Washington Jr., because you can't out-soul Grover Washington Jr. I said, man, I want to play like that." Initially, he played at school, where he was able to rent the instrument, he said. It helped that music was a big part of his household, where his parents Edward and Rita Dawson welcomed others into the home.
