e purpose of the annual McDonald County Directory is twofold: (1) to provide a format through which newcomers can quickly find information as to housing, city fees, school locations and numbers and other information that will make settling here a more comfortable and speedy process; and (2) to give those who have lived in McDonald County for some time a quick, uncluttered reference to the availability of services, entertainment and education. Organized on March 3, 1849, from Newton County and named for Alexander McDonald, a Revolutionary War soldier, McDonald County was originally defined by the legislature as Seneca County and attached to Newton County for civil and military purposes. On Jan. 1, 1847, the name was changed to McDonald upon formal organization of the county. ere are many fun activities to enjoy in McDonald County including floating on the Elk River. e Elk River is ideal for beginners – lay back, and enjoy a day in the scenic environment around you and experience nature in its fullest. e Elk River offers gorgeous scenery with many "rest stops" and swimming holes to enjoy a cooling dip. e many natural springs along the Elk River, Indian Creek and Big Sugar keep the water cool, but comfortable, and running year round for canoeing, raing, kayaking and tubing fun. Between 2014 and 2015, McDonald County's median household income grew from $38,122 to $38,368, a 0.65 percent increase. e median property value in McDonald County is $88,400, and the homeownership rate is 70.3 percent. Most people in McDonald County and the average commute time is 26.7 minutes. e county seat of McDonald County is Pineville. e county has three sites on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Old McDonald County Courthouse and the Powell Bridge.
