The Fayetteville 50 1867 Ð T he Howard School (now Fayetteville State University) is founded. Nov. 21, 1889 Ð T he city celebrates the centennial of North CarolinaÕ s ratification of the U.S. Constitution, held in Fayetteville on the same day 100 years earlier. 1896 Ð D r. John Henry Marsh and Dr. Jacob Franklin Highsmith organized the Marsh-Highsmith Sanitarium, North CarolinaÕ s first private hospital. June 20, 1775 Ð T he Liberty Point Declaration of Independence is signed at the corner of Bow and Person streets. April 18, 1783 Ð C ampbellton is renamed Fayetteville. Nov. 21, 1789 Ð A t a meeting of the General Assembly in Fayetteville, the University of North Carolina, is chartered. March 4, 1825 Ð T he Marquis de Lafayette, Frenchman and Revolutionary War hero, visits Fayetteville. May 29, 1831 Ð T he Great Fire of Fayetteville destroys 600 homes, 125 businesses and the State House. Feb. 15, 1853 Ð T he plank road from Fayetteville to Salem, one of the longest in the state, is complete. March 11, 1865 Ð U nion forces under Gen. William T. Sherman destroy the federal arsenal at Fayetteville. 48|June/July • 2009 Dec. 24, 1902 Ð F ayettevilleÕ s new municipal electricity plant begins operation. 1912 Ð T he Capitol, a Hay Street department store, is established by Jacob and Kehmen Stein. Dec. 23, 1912 Ð T he first passenger train of the Aberdeen & Rockfish Railroad ran into Fayetteville. March 7, 1914 Ð G eorge Herman Ò BabeÓ Ruth hits his first professional home run in Fayetteville. Sept. 30, 1922 Ð C amp Bragg is renamed Fort Bragg and made a permanent establishment of the U.S. Army. April 15, 1925 - The Prince Charles Hotel opens for the first time. Nov. 11, 1931 - Large crowds welcome aviator Amelia Earhart on her first visit to Fayetteville during the American Legion Armistice Day air show. For her part in the show, she flew an Ò autogyro,Ó a precursor to the helicopter. Oct. 17, 1940 Ð T he Veterans Administration Hospital, Ramsey Street, is dedicated. A replica of the Market House still tops the front fa• ade. June 1, 1899 Ð G round is broken for the Tolar, Hart, Holt Mill in Massey Hill. Sept. 16, 1918 Ð C onstruction begins on Camp Bragg, later named Fort Bragg. December 1919 - Commander of American Expeditionary Forces in Europe during World War I, Gen. John Joseph Pershing, addresses Fayetteville residents from the balcony of the Market House.
