showcase of art brought back from their travels – pottery from Greece, wooden figures from the Dominican Republic and pieces from Costa Rica, Cabo San Lucas and St. Barths. Charleston, where the couple was engaged, may be close to home but is still one of their favorite collecting spots. As every fledgling family knows, babies bring structural changes. And the birth of Taliaferro and Caroline’s daughter, Hartley, was no exception. To accommodate their family’s new addition, they renovated the upstairs bathrooms, removing shower doors and tiling the baths. And, of course, Caroline welcomed the opportunity to infuse a little more color in the process. What they didn’t anticipate was Hartley’s impact on their art collection. As the toddler grew into quite the explorer, pottery pieces slowly made their way up shelves and out of arm’s reach until their collecting was easier moved to the walls. They found a natural choice in the earthy but vivid fine art photography of Peter Lik and selected images for their house from his Las Vegas gallery. They have also seen a slight shift in the way they use the space. Once a hub, the home theater now rarely sees much activity outside of the family’s annual Super Bowl party. They’re spending a lot more time downstairs these days. “The kitchen is where everything takes place now,” Caroline said. Luckily, Taliaferro thought ahead with a great room that creates flow between the kitchen and living space. The couple is also constantly upgrading and adding to their home’s “green” elements as new products come on the market. So far, five skylights, energy-efficient windows, zoned air conditioning, a tankless water heater and sealed crawl space make the house both earthy and earth-friendly. And Caroline’s favorite feature? “Its strength,” she says. “It is earthy, simple, and masculine. You get such a sense of stability.” And as a smile spreads across her face, it’s impossible to tell if she is still talking about the house, or rather the man who built it.
