Fine Living When Taliaferro Parks built a house for his wife and daughter, there was only one glitch – he hadn’t met them yet. Armed with plenty of books and an inherited appreciation for lumber, he set out to bring the city one of its few Craftsman houses and, in the process, poured the perfect foundation for his family-to-be. I n 2003, building a Craftsman house posed a few problems. Building materials were scarce and objects made in the tradition few and far between. But Fayetteville native Taliaferro Parks (pronounced Toliver) had enough know-how and vision to sidestep this issue and custom build the missing pieces, resulting in a rustic retreat nestled just off Morganton Road. Broad tapered columns and a sturdy porch welcome you into the house, and once inside, visitors are infused with an immediate sense of calm. The Arts and Crafts movement dates back to the 19th century when builders wanted to emphasize the handmade over the mass- produced, a rebuttal to the excesses of the earlier Victorian era. And itÕ s easy to see the Asian influences brought to the style by famous architects and brothers, Charles and Henry Greene. The repetition of rectilinear patterns and the subtle oyster color of the walls against hulking beams of cherry wood and Douglas fir contribute to a sense of refuge.
