The beat is back – with a twist – thanks to Finn’s fresh interpretations, and Roach says he’s impressed. “That’s what his charts do – they take the old music and put new licks into it,” Roach said. “He is very knowledgeable, and his music is good. He is some kind of super.” For another original band member, Dick Perry, his work with the current orchestra has also kept his love for swing alive. Perry has been playing since high school and entertained his fellow troops when he served in the military, touring Japan and performing in USO shows. The big band appeals to everyone, he said. “It is something everyone understands,” Perry recently said. “It’s something I’ve always done, and I’ll always do it as long as I have someone to play with.” Perry shouldn’t have any worries; the Fayetteville Jazz Orchestra is scheduled to play this month at Festival Park in downtown Fayetteville. Gambill and Finn are hopeful that the community will catch on to their sound, drawing in a younger fan base. “The music is exciting and passionate,” Finn said. “There are a lot of reasons for it to have more appeal.” For those who like listening to good local music or want to dance to it, or both, the orchestra has what all music lovers relish: an eclectic energy that resonates through its songs. And that’s something that appeals to people of all ages. Finn says that some young people may think that the style of music is considered too “old.” But when it comes to this jazz orchestra, what’s old is new again. “I want people to know there is a true big band in Fayetteville,” Gambill said at their most recent concert, “not a dance band or an electronic band, but a true swing band in the tradition of big bands like Benny Goodman, Count Basie and Stan Kenton.”CV Cape Fear Orthopaedic Clinic, P.
