Photo by Jeff Melton Michael Wilson and Marisa Owens fi rst met in their language arts class at Crest Middle School and became friends. By their sopho- more year of High School they began dating and went to junior and senior prom together. Michael and Marisa both graduated from Crest High School in June, 2016. Following graduation, Marisa enrolled at Cleveland Community College. Her goal is to work with special needs children. Michael joined the US Army and graduated basic training in March, 2017 in Fort Benning Georgia. While in Georgia for Michaels grad- uation, the couple went to the Peachtree mall where Michael purchased an engagement ring for Marisa. He proposed on March 3rd, 2017. Marissa continued her education at CCC while Michael trained as a Paratrooper, in the Airborne Division with the US Army. Soon af- ter graduation, Michael received his orders to be stationed in Italy for two years. The couple had scheduled September 3rd, 2017 (their 4-year anniversary) as their wed- ding date. Unfortunately, Michael could not get leave until December 16th, which changed their wedding date to December 17, 2017. As the wedding date neared, Marisa tried to get all the papers in order and realized the marriage license application needed to be signed by both of them. Complications began when Michael informed Marisa there was no fed ex or army carrier that could get the paper work back before the wedding. The employees at the Cleveland County Register of Deed's Offi ce informed Marisa that the Registrar, Betsy Harnage, would be willing to meet the couple at her offi ce on Saturday, December 16th to complete the marriage li- cense. More complications arose when Mari- sa received a text from Michael saying that he wouldn't arrive in Charlotte until Sunday. The wedding was scheduled for 5pm Sunday evening. Marisa didn't know if Michael would make the wedding at all. Michael's fl ight land- ed at Charlotte Douglas Airport at 11:25am on Sunday. Both Michael and Marisa immediate- ly met with Registrar Harnage. At 12:30pm, they got their marriage license, just in the nick of time. Their special day will be a story to tell their children. Michael traveled back to Italy the 1st of Jan- uary, 2018 while Marisa remained in Cleve- land County. She will graduate in May of 2018 with a 2-year degree from Cleveland Commu- nity College. Michael's deployment will end April, 2019. Cleveland County would like to congratulate this couple and thank Michael for his service to our country. Submitted by Kerri Melton Register of Deeds Offi ce goes above and beyond to help young couple on their wedding day Marisa Owens and Michael Wilson on their wed- ding day.
