However, there's a new breed of TV dra- ma that blurs the line between good and bad, and audiences can't seem to get enough. Viola Davis ("Fences," 2016) returns as prominent criminal defense attorney and law professor Annalise Keat- ing in the midseason premiere of "How to Get Away With Murder," airing Thursday, Jan. 18, on ABC. When the series began, Keating and five of her law students became inter- twined in a murder plot, and they have covered up various crimes over the years as a re- sult. In season 4, a new mys- tery unfolds. Created and executive pro- duced by Peter Nowalk ("Grey's Anatomy"), "How to Get Away With Murder" hails from ShondaLand productions, the company founded by pro- lific, award-winning television producer and writer Shonda Rhimes ("Scandal"). In addi- tion to flipping the typical le- gal drama premise on its head, the show is innovative in that it makes use of both flashback and flash-forward sequences to explore the characters' crimes, of which there are many. It premiered in 2014 and is now part of ABC's solid ShondaLand Thursday night programming block. Early on in its production, it was announced that "How to Get Away With Murder" would be a limited series, with only 15 or 16 episodes per sea- son, in accordance with a deal with series star Davis. It should come as no surprise that pro- ducers were willing to make accommodations for the Oscar winner, who's the only black actor to win the so-called Tri- ple Crown of Acting, which in- cludes an Academy Award, an Emmy and a Tony. Annalise may be one of the lawbreak- ers, but Davis is almost univer- sally loved in the role by critics and fans. Her work in "HT- GAWM" has earned her a number of accolades, among them being the first black woman to win the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. She's also won two SAG Awards and an Im- age Award, along with numer- ous nominations. While Davis could carry the series on her own, she has a stellar cast supporting her, which makes "How to Get Away With Murder" all the better. Billy Brown co-stars as her love interest, Nate Lahey, a detective with the Philadel- phia Police Department. The actor is perhaps best known for playing another detective, Mike Anderson in Showtime's "Dexter." His other credits in- clude FX's "Lights Out" and "Sons of Anarchy," as well as CBS's "Hostages" and Fox's "The Following." Now the Keating 4, due to the death of Wes Gibbins (Al- fred Enoch, "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone," 2001) in season 3, Annalise's charges are portrayed by a number of the industry's brightest stars. Karla Souza portrays Wes's former lover Laurel Castillo, whose newborn baby was left without a father when Wes died. Aja Naomi King ("Emily Owens, MD") stars as fellow Keating 4 member Michaela Pratt, a role that earned her a nomination for the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 2015. Her other cred- its include the historical film "Birth of a Nation" (2016) and feature films "Four" (2012) and "Reversion" (2015). Some fans were concerned that Jack Falahee, who plays Connor Walsh, might leave the series since it seemed like he was in danger in the fall finale, but so far so good for the star. He graduated from New York's prestigious Tisch School of the Arts with a BFA and went on to appear in such TV series as "The Carrie Diaries," "Iron- side" and "Twisted," along with the PBS period drama "Mercy Street." Matt McGorry rounds out the Keating 4 as Asher Mill- stone. A former competitive bodybuilder, McGorry is best known for his role as John Bennett in the acclaimed Netf- lix comedy-drama "Orange Is the New Black." He started out in the ABC daytime drama "One Life to Live" and later appeared in "Gossip Girl," "Person of Interest" and "Roy- al Pains." Fans are likely wondering what's become of the charac- ters since the events of the thrilling midseason finale, which aired on Thursday, Nov. 18. When viewers last left Ann- alise and her cohorts, they were each dealing with the fallout of a tragedy. While Ann- alise tried desperately to revive the baby to which Laurel gave birth while stuck in an elevator, Laurel lay bleeding and her sta- tus is still unknown. Elsewhere, Michaela struggles to cover the group's tracks after Simon (Behzad Dabu, "The Chi") acci- dentally shoots himself in the head while confronting the others about their plan. Later, Asher is arrested and Connor is unaware he's being observed by Dominick (Nicholas Gonza- lez, "The Good Doctor"), Wes's murderer. Take heart fans, "How to Get Away With Murder" re- turns Thursday, Jan. 18, on ABC. And don't forget to tune in early for the returns of fel- low ratings winners "Scandal" and "Grey's Anatomy."
