Roger's Library
offers Spanish
language program,
story times
Frida Mateo was kind of a
kid hero herself. When Frida
was in high school she started
volunteering at the Roger's
Public Library.
"I used to volunteer here at
the children's library,"
Frida said. "I enjoyed
helping out with the
programs, so when I saw a
job available I applied, got
the job and I really like it."
Frida, now 19 and of
Mexican heritage, is a
children's library assistant
and helps with children's
story times and other
activities.
"We have many
programs going
on all week," she
explained. "We
have baby story
time, preschool
story time,
toddler story time and a family
story time. On Tuesdays we
do Hispanic story time for the
Spanish speaking community.
A Spanish speaker herself,
Sarah enjoys the interaction with
her Hispanic library patrons.
"I'm bilingual and that helps
with the Hispanic community,"
she said. "We actually do that
on Tuesdays. We have regulars
and we get to know them. We
read Spanish books
and we play a Spanish
game called Loteria
(Lot-er-ria). It's a kind
of Spanish bingo. It's
a very big deal in our
culture. It's a family
game that everyone
likes to play and
people really enjoy
it."
While the Roger's
Library lends books
and offers other
programming to the
community, including STEM
based ones, Frida said the
kids especially like one of their
hands-on programs.
"We have a dog that comes
in on Saturdays," she said.
"He's a therapy dog. His
name is Obi. He's a great
Pyrenees. It's fun and the
kids really like petting him.
He's a big dog and he's
soft."
