Sasser had a provision allowing students in good standing to go home for lunch. So Stuart Williams and Ned Garber and I had a rotating schedule of kitchen visits to each others' homes. While I do hope that one of those guys could tell you stories of my mom's kitchen, I can tell you that the best eating was done at Pat Garber's table. We would roll up in Ned's Toyota, the one with the over- powered 8-track player loaded with Aerosmith or Lynyrd Skynyrd. When Mama Goo felt the bass line behind Steven Tyler's vocals in her driveway, she started hauling stuff out of the oven and off of the stove top: baked chicken and sweet potatoes and green beans and cornbread and sweet tea. I remember Principal Sasser on the intercom threatening disciplinary action if lunch goers were caught in restaurants instead of at their homes. I thought, "Are you kidding, Mr. Sasser? I'm going to Mama Goo's." Not all of the kitchens were great all of the time. Sharon Ruppe (now Smith) and I still giggle today about her mom's cold cucumber soup experiment that all six of her clan and I "enjoyed" one evening aer a day of summer play. And I clearly recall being escorted out of Chip Williamson's kitchen aer he and I fell into the lake just before coming back inside. So I cannot really tell you what they had to eat; I can only tell you where they kept their mop. Still, when I one day go to "spend it" in the many mansions promised to me in the aerlife, I will put down my overnight bag and run to the kitchen to see my mom and Mama Goo and Mama Sue. I do hope heaven's perfection has resulted in a better handle for the Jiffy Pop.
