Not a licensed contractor Quartzsite Business Licensed by Joanne Winer Ten years ago, the mayor received a call from Ran- dy Sparks, director of the folk music group called the New Christy Minstrels. He had written a song many years before and recorded it several times called Hi Jolly, about Quartzsite's famous camel driver. Randy had been driving through this area in the late 50s and saw the sign on Main St. for the Hi Jolly Tomb at the cemetery. He stopped and saw what is now the famous pyramid gravesite of Hi Jolly, and before he made it to L.A. he already had composed a song. The group played it many times in many concerts over the years, but had never played it in Quartzsite, so he wanted to know why he had never been invited to come here to perform it! New Christy Minstrels returns for 10th year The mayor at the time was Verlyn Michel, and he did not know at fi rst what to say to this inquiry, but he assured Randy that the New Christy Minstrels were certainly welcome to come here and perform. He arranged with the Quartzsite Improvement Assoc. (Q.I.A.) to have them booked for a concert that January, and they had a sold out crowd. Who knew that everyone would love to hear some good old folk music that still makes for great entertainment? Since that fi rst concert, the New Christy Minstrels have been coming back every January to do two more concerts each year. They sure do put on a great show!! Anyone who loves folk music will want to see these concerts and meet with this long time group that has been playing for 56 years.
