The theme for this year's essay was "America's Gift to my Generation." Out of all of the schools in La Paz and Yuma County, her essay out- shone those of her peers to show a deep understanding of the gifts al- lowed to our youth from our great county. Dennis Dole, the District 1 Commander, which covers La Paz and Yuma Counties, stated that Kenna started with winning the local Post Essay con- test before moving on to the District level. She will now represent District 1 at the State level at the VFW Winter Conference in January in Gila Bend, Arizona. The winner of the state competition will go on to the National Convention with the opportunity to win $15,000 in scholarship money. Due to recent budge cuts at the coun- ty level, the County Health Depart- ment was not able to afford an em- ployee to come out to surrounding areas including Quartzsite to issue Food Handler Cards and classes. Quartzsite's Marie Wister felt that "it would be disastrous and a dis- service to our vast volunteer base or others that could not make the trip, so I've volunteered to teach the class to all who needs to be re-certified or obtain a food handler card." The cost will remain the same as the $15.00 per paid employee and Free for all those who need the Volunteer Card. The following classes will be held at Quartzsite Senior Center located at 40 Moon Mountain Ave. December 20th, 10 am January 3rd, 10 am Folks also still drive to the County Health Dept. in Parker to obtain their food handlers card.
