While many films, TV series and even video games have attempted to recreate the excitement felt when immersed in a novel's narrative, it took until 2014 for the magical experience of liter- ature to feel authentically fa- miliar on screen. The secret, seemingly endless library that exists beneath the Metropoli- tan Public Library is reopened and transformed this year, as "The Librarians" continues to hit the books in season 4, with the latest episode premiering Wednesday, Dec. 20, on TNT. "The Librarians" sprung up as a North American series in the fall of 2014, inspired by and correlating with the film franchise of the same name. When potential librarians be- gin to be systematically killed off, it's up to the current librari- an, Flynn Carsen (Noah Wyle, "E.R."), and his newly appoint- ed guardian, Eve Baird (Rebec- ca Romijn, "Ugly Betty"), to lo- cate the remaining potential victims and prevent them from being killed. This new group of would-be librarians, or LITs (li- brarians in training) as they come to be known, teams up with Flynn and Eve to continue questing for magical literary artifacts, keeping them safely out of the hands of those sinis- ter forces that would misuse them. These new librarians each bring their own unique talents to the team. Ezekiel Jones, played by John Harlan Kim ("Neighbours"), is a tech-sav- vy thief with quick wit and lots of luck, who is willing to take chances and break rules. Cas- sandra Cillian, played by Lindy Booth ("Dawn of the Dead," 2004), has synesthesia, provid- ing her with a unique sensory perspective on information and its interpretation. The group is rounded off by Jacob Stone (Christian Kane, "Lever- age"), who, until becoming a librarian, cloaked his back- ground as an art historian un- der the guise of being an oil rig worker. The trio is well bal- anced, with each possessing a skill that the others lack, and the intellect to recognize that together they can achieve more and have a greater chance of keeping the library safe. The past three seasons have seen the librarians navigating their way through time and space in order to successfully retrieve sacred artifacts, all the while facing some formidable foes. Season 3 was Egypt-cen- tric, with the god of chaos, Apep, set loose and creating havoc across the globe. An ad- ditional threat was found with the introduction of D.O.S.A., a federal anti-magic agency looking to contain the library and its technicians while ac- quiring the wealth of knowl- edge that they possess. The team manages to juggle both of the imposing threats, but with each season's passing, it appears as though the library itself is becoming increasingly unstable. Season 4 could be the start of a major transfor- mation for this living, breath- ing house of mystical literature. It doesn't take long to rec- ognize how heavily influenced "The Librarians" is by the ad- venture genre, with clear nods to both the Indiana Jones films and the Uncharted video game series. While both franchises take their cues from historical texts and legends, the action- driven plots often wander miles away from their textual inspirations. Meanwhile, "The Librarians" places far greater emphasis on the importance of literature through skillful use of the written word, not merely as a jumping off point, but as a continual reference — a means through which a literal escape is created in order to fill in for the metaphorical escape one achieves through reading a book. The reason for this isn't hard to pinpoint, as Kane so aptly noted while talking with "Talk Nerdy with Us" at this year's New York Comic Con. For Kane, there is a recognition that "we're all going through a rough time right now," a time that requires the series to "[have viewers] sit down on that couch, not think about [their] job, not think about life, not think about what's out there in the world and be en- tertained." Just as a great nov- el can carry a reader out of a difficult time or place into one of contentment and strength, so, too, does "The Librarians." As a cinematic series dedicated to emphasizing the magic of literature, it continues to lift its viewers out of the harsh reali- ties of day-to-day life, into a place where the supernatural is real and history remains ever relevant. Season 4 of "The Librari- ans" has only just begun, but already it's clear that change is imminent. Surrounded by un- certainty, the group must take even greater risks and make bolder discoveries. Reality will be distorted as Flynn, Eve, Eze- kiel, Cassandra and Jacob try to prepare themselves for a major shift within the library itself. They're still committed to retrieving artifacts and keeping magic hidden from those who would abuse it, but the question now is whether the library will still be commit- ted to helping them. Take a lit- eral leap through the pages of literature alongside "The Li- brarians," with an all-new epi- sode airing Wednesday, Dec. 20, on TNT.
