"That was a lot of people that come together, no matter the age, no matter the race. "It's people coming together, not just the entertainment but the reason behind it. Most of the people know that the Embers are there to raise money to be able to give a child that may not receive anything at Christmas." Proceeds from the concert benefit the Empty Stocking Fund, a long-held tradition in this community. But not everyone is familiar with what that entails, Records said. "We accept donations and their names are published in the paper — whether it's anonymous, in memory of or in honor of," she said. "Dona- tions are being accepted start- ing now. "This year we have 600 chil- dren, ages 4 to 10. The teach- ers provide the names of the children throughout Wayne County who could benefit." Every child on that list is eligible to receive a full set of clothes, she said, which includes a pair of pants, shirt and underwear and pair of socks, all donated by Belk and JC Penney. They can also pick a toy of their choice. They get to meet Santa Claus, have a photo taken with him, and receive a bag of goodies and a book. This year's Empty Stocking Fund distribution will be held Saturday, Dec. 9, at 9 a.m. in the auditorium of Goldsboro High School. Tickets are required and the child has to be present, Records said. The number of recipients may sound high, but Records said it is actually on the con- servative side. "I did not realize how many families are still displaced from Hurricane Matthew. We could probably very easily go to 1,000 children that would be in need," she said. "I think people forget about the less fortunate and they forget about being small themselves. We get so tied up in every- thing that's going on around us all in our lives. "I just wish people would stop and think, there's chil- dren in Wayne County that don't get food on the week- ends. None." She said in addition to buy- ing a ticket to an Embers con- cert, in addition to making a monetary donation to the Empty Stocking Fund, there is another way to help make the holidays brighter for area families — volunteer. "We welcome any and all volunteers, from boxing clothes to stuffing the back- packs to helping them get seated and walking up and getting their toys, the Empty Stocking Fund event is 100 percent volunteer," she said. "They can commit 30 minutes to a couple hours, especially when you're boxing 600 sets of clothes." Tickets for the concert are available at the News-Argus, and donations for the Empty Stocking Fund can also be dropped off at the newspaper office at 310 N. Berkeley Blvd. For more information, con- tact Records at 919-739-7910 or 910-305-0070.
