Montana Beta Celebrates 90 Years on Campus Brothers, Support the 50/50 Campaign W e celebrated the 90th anniversary of Montana Beta's presence on the University of Montana campus—think about the significance of this achievement. Through all the ups and downs, crisis and triumphs, Montana Beta has managed to survive. Other fraternities have come and gone and in some cases come back, but we have survived it all. This hasn't happened in a bubble; it has happened because of hard work and a belief that SAE and Montana Beta plays a big part in our lives and has had something to do with making us all better people. We believe it still has a place in this society to help with the education of our young men. SAE builds friendships that will last a lifetime. It taught many of us to learn to appreciate others' beliefs. I think practicing the True Gentleman, along with the Golden Rule and the Ten Commandments, are all we really need to live a good and honorable life. In honor of Montana Beta's 90th anniversary, we are launching a 50/50 Campaign to ask 180 brothers, parents, and friends to join in raising $90,000. Each dollar will be split 50/50 between a tax-deductible scholarship endowment (Montana Beta Chapter Education Fund) and current funds to upgrade the house at 1120 Gerald, which are not tax deductible. Reaching our goal will help grow the Montana Beta Chapter Education Fund, an endowed scholarship fund with the SAE Foundation, to send at least two undergraduate brothers to SAE Leadership School. The endowed funds also could be used for tuition to the SAE Eminent Archon Institute, academic scholarship at the University of Montana, or other education purposes. Funds will also take care of our current top priority for the chapter house: replacing the exterior siding. Your donations to the 50/50 Campaign count toward your lifetime giving levels with Sigma Alpha Epsilon Foundation. "I needed guidance as a young man. Leaving my family and friends back home in Baltimore, Md., wasn't easy, but I quickly found friendship and guidance within Montana Beta." Doug's decision to join took root when he attended recruitment, but was cemented because of Wayne Dale Erlenbush '78 detailing the benefits and advantages of Montana Beta brotherhood. Doug grew into many roles with Montana Beta and had leadership skills instilled while earning his degree in education. "My phoenix moment hit during my third year as a Beta. The house membership was in trouble and I received an unexpected call from a member I did not always see eye to eye with. Mark Kjoss wanted my help with recruitment and asked that we put our differences aside for the better of the chapter. I was so impressed and moved by his unselfishness that I agreed. I went on to be Eminent Archon, served as treasurer for two years, and also steward for three years." Sadly, Mark was diagnosed with cancer and was unable to graduate. "It was an honor to have been able to work with such a dedicated member." After graduation, those values and strengths he learned as a member were put into practice. As an alumnus, Doug Montana beta a Home Away from Home for Douglas "Doug" Banks '79 (Continued on page 2)
