MU CHAPTER OF DELTA KAPPA EPSILON | COLGATE UNIVERSITY | VOL. LIV, NO. II FALL 2017 Yon Clarion Bell FOUNDATION NEWS FROM THE TEMPLE In This Issue: Thank You, Generous Brothers 2 An Immediate Connection 3 A Mad and Mystic Ride 4 A s 2017 comes to an end, it is important to reflect on the great support Mu of DKE has received in the past year and also look ahead to what 2018 will offer. We'd first like to thank Rich Sotell '75 for his many years of service on the Foundation Board. Rich will continue to provide his wisdom and support to the board and will manage the endowment through Kraematon Group. We'd also like to welcome our newest member, Mike Miller '12, to the board. Mike has been getting his feet wet helping Joe Vogler '08 with treasurer duties and will likely step into this role once we allow Joe to step down. It is with heavy hearts that we share the sad news of the passing of Thomas P. Halley Jr. '73. Tom served on the DKE International Board and also as the Mu Foundation Chairman for several years. Tom will be dearly missed. Looking ahead to 2018, our Chapter has much to look forward to. Construction on the Temple's foundation and exterior is set to begin in spring/summer 2018 and the campaign will come to an end in June. We invite you to join us at our reunion to celebrate the end of our campaign and the start of construction. This is an exciting and transformative time at Colgate with changes coming soon with the new administration. If there were ever an opportunity for DKE to return to a recognized status on campus, this is that opportunity. A successful campaign will support our argument that we have a strong and engaged alumni who are eager to support a recognized undergraduate chapter on campus. This year, our Chapter has thrived with the help of our dedicated alumni base. • 17 alumni brothers were inducted in the last year. • Two hundred and forty-seven alumni and friends have pledged $1,986,299 toward our renovations and restart. • Alumni are engaged and involved like never before. The Stoking the Embers to Preserve the Flame campaign needs our attention to create long-lasting and sustainable achievement for all. That's why I ask that you participate and be a part of Deke's success. We are still $1 million short of our $3.3 million goal. Without further support from every alumnus, the work required for the Temple cannot begin. The only way to handle this much-needed renovation is to reach our campaign goal. We believe that for Mu of DKE to continue to succeed we must complete this project. Make a commitment today. Each of us, simply by our presence, has contributed to the history of DKE at Colgate. How appropriate, then, that each of our names be entered into its halls. Remember, donors contributing $2,500 or more, in a five-year pledge, will be recognized on a plaque prominently displayed in the Temple. Please consider adding your name to the donor list by sending your pledge in the enclosed envelope today. Thank you for your support. In the Bonds, Barry Ridings '74 Campaign Chairman Sean F. T he predecessor to Mu's Yon Clarion Bell was the Mu Link, published in 1921. The Mu Link was meant to strengthen the connection between the undergraduates and alumni. The Mu Link was replaced by the Yon Clarion Bell in 1963. As always, Mu was well ahead of its time, while simultaneously steeped in its history. Register on our website, www.mudke.org, to access online historical records like the 1921 Mu Link and Yon Clarion Bells dating back to 1973. If you have any historical materials, documents, or items you'd like to share or give to the Temple archives, please contact Sean Devlin '05 at sfitzmichaeld@ msn.com or mail them to Sean at 34 Linnet St., West Roxbury, MA 02132. Historical throwback: Originally printed in the 1975 Yon Clarion Bell, Neil Abbot '75, Rick Mirabelli '75, John Barnett '76, and Al Forslund '75, who were captains and assistant captains of the Colgate varsity hockey team.
