16 www.DesertMessenger.com December 6, 2017 SHOOTING FROM PAGE 1 QUARTZSITE SOUVENIRS! By Pamela Caskey The Soup and Chowder Festival at the QIA is changing some things for the good this year. We will be as last year combining the event with the Operation Hero Comfort event. They seem to compliment one another very well. The tasting starts at noon and lasts until 3pm or until food runs out. As last year, there will be tables set up in the main hall for those who want to sit and eat and listen to the music. There will also be tables set up in the dining room for those who chose to be there. The raffle items will be in the main hall along northwest wall and tables set up in front of that and the stage. To avoid having people waiting in long lines, they will be given tickets with numbers on them. At noon we will start allowing folks to go into the dining room from the northside door. You can pick up the trays and get all the soups or chowders desired to sample and one dessert each. From there, just find a table and enjoy sampling the delicious soups and chow- ders. Then judge the one that should receive the Peoples Choice Award. We will have a selected group to judge all of the soups and chowders to decide who gets first, second, and third place; plus another group to sample the desserts to judge who gets the Best of Choice Award. This year we are so happy to see the VFW Post 769 come on board and they are making a soup or a chowder. Last year we had some of the local restaurants involved. The second year there was only one restaurant par- 4 th Annual Soup & Chowder Fest Dec. 9-noon ticipating, which was the GrubStake Bar & Grill. The first year it was all local residents who provided all the supplies and foods needed for the event. Every year it has gotten bigger and better. I want to truly thank all of those that have helped me on this journey. I am sure it will be done for years to come. And many folks will make friends drawing together for the good of all and to help provide the food bank with needed funds to help those truly in need. We still could use some donations of desserts and would love to get a few more folks to sing some Holiday music on the stage. We will have the LDS choir from 12 noon to 12:45 and the flute circle If any one has an item they want to donate for the raffle bring it to the QIA or call me and I will go get it. Thank you all for helping any way you can. And thank you Thrivent for the seed money to get many ma- terials needed for the event. The QIA is located at 235 E. Ironwood Dr. Quartzsite. For more informa- tion contact me at 603-834-0647. Quartzsite Police Chief William Ponce said three officers were called out of bed in the dead of night to as- sist Officer Hovdal, the single of- ficer on duty. Chief Ponce and Lt. Ewald rushed to the Bouse Rest Stop, while Sgt. Conley and Officer Hovdal stayed behind to protect the town. Conley was then called to the rest stop area to assist agencies. Chief Ponce said, "Our main goal was to stop any threat from coming into Quartzsite. We want to keep our community safe." "Gunfire was exchanged, and Lt. Ewald did discharge his firearm," said Chief Ponce. He was placed on paid admin before being cleared to return to duty. Westbound I-10 was closed at milepost 81 west of Tonopah. Traf- fic was detoured north to U.S. 60 via Salome Road at milepost 81 and return to I-10 via Vicksburg Road at milepost 45. Petkovic was on life support and not expected to survive, officials said Wednesday. "We want to thank our partnering agencies for their cooperation," said Chief Ponce.
