MAIN STREET, QUARTZSITE 704-575-6719 NASCAR Come see us at our NEW LOCATION! We have SKY LANTERNS! by Joanne Winer The annual spaghetti dinner for Celia's Rainbow Gardens benefi t was held on Nov. 14 this year, and it almost didn't happen except for the two new angels that offered to help keep it going. There are al- ways people who volunteer behind the scenes when I have an event to do, as well as those who volunteer at the park. This year, after over 15 years of being my cook for the spa- ghetti dinner, Richard Trusty had to give up helping at the dinner be- cause of health issues. What was I going to do?? Cancel the dinner?? I put an article in the paper back in Oct. asking for volunteers who could help cook the spaghetti ahead of time and also help the night of the dinner. Two people who I nev- er would have expected to have the time to help called and offered to do it this year--Barbie and Paul from Barbie's Place on E. Main St. across from the Family Dollar. They said they had seen the article and knew that I needed help, and they de- cided that in spite of all their hours of hard work every day, that they would help. Barbie was such a help to us last summer when I was in the hospital for over a month. She would make Paul sandwiches almost every day and take them down to the book store to make sure that he had something to eat while I was in Phoenix--I fi rst met her after I got out and instantly liked her and Paul, her husband. She runs Barbie's Place and he now works as a cook at Sweet Darlene's, so they both put in some long hours. It was so wonderful of them to make sure that Paul was looked after when I couldn't be there--shows what a nice couple they are!! Now, they had come to the rescue again, and if you have ever seen the commercial for the ever ready bun- ny you know how fast they work. We went to the QIA the Sunday be- fore the dinner to precook the sauce and noodles and make the cakes. They came after both had worked all morning and in just a few hours had all the spaghetti cooked and ready for the dinner. The day of the dinner they both had a hard day at their jobs, but still came over after they fi nished and worked for sever- al more hours getting the spaghetti and sauce hot enough for the serv- ing lines. They must have been ex- hausted by the end of the night, but they still left with a smile on their face. I just want them to know how much I appreciated their help and friendship. They are what Garden Angels are all about! The funds raised at the dinner will be used to work on the monu- ments that are going to be put in the Heroes Bell Garden area of the Gar- dens which was started last year. The archway is up and the bells are hung, and now we have to start building the bases that the monu- ments will be made of. If you have any free time and would like to be a volunteer for this project honoring all of the fi rst responders--police, fi re, search and rescue, military, 9/11 etc. please contact me at 927- 6551 or check the newspaper for up- coming work sessions which will be starting by the end of this month. Picnic lunches will be provided for anyone who can give some hours to honor these men and women--if you think about it, you have prob- ably used their services at least once in your life and they deserve to be thanked and honored for their ser- vice to us. Please volunteer to help if you have a little time, any time you can give will be greatly appreci- ated. We are looking for people who know how to lay brick, mix cement, rake gravel, plant bushes and trees, or just help clean up the area so the work can be done. If you can't do that kind of work, maybe you could help put out the food for the lunch! There will be several work sessions coming up so please think about joining us in honoring these wor- thy groups and making this area a special place. We need some more garden angels!! For further infor- mation, please call me at 927-6551.
